A Worldview With a Local Perspective
I’m a bit ashamed that, after 5+ years of AR membership and participation, I have not read AR’s worldview, the Weltanschauung (boy THAT brings back some not-so-fond memories of my German classes in college!) until Lynn created the 2012 BIG Jumpstart Blog Challenge.
Sure, I had an idea about what it was, particularly in the very early days since discussion with bloggers who started with AR and the founders made it pretty obvious, and the worldview was, if not specifically articulated publically, patently clear to those who embraced this new vision.
The philosophy of AR, and the approach they have taken since inception to create what many believe is a truly unique social network, is really quite profound. And while many things have changed through years of growth and membership, and the explosion of blogging, the original philosophy has remained, although with some tarnish around the edges.
There are many components of the Weltanschauung one can write about – the one striking me, in particular, is “We believe that real estate professionals will thrive if they demonstrate their local market expertise.”
While a worldview is absolutely appropriate given our international economy, global politics, and the over-riding impact of world conditions on housing, a more narrow perspective is certainly equally fitting these days. Just consider the never-ending on-line media, and print national and regional headlines, about the housing marketing...spewing generalizations, eschewing local reports, and seemingly ignorant of the truth of the real estate market.
We, the real estate professionals and affiliated professions, know this to be true.
Further, from a competitive standpoint, it’s clear we must be the local experts, to set ourselves apart from the mainstream, but more importantly to truly provide quality service to our clients. What is meaningful in their world of buying a home and selling IS the local market, and we are doing a vast disservice by not having the knowledge commensurate with the conditions that impact their decisions.
Indeed, ActiveRain has been structured with that focus in mind, encouraging bloggers to share local knowledge, allowing them to sponsor communities, creating Localism (regardless of how you view its success or lack thereof, the concept is insightful), and categorizing participants by city or town. They clearly have recognized the value of the local viewpoint, and encourage.
But it remains our responsibility, as real estate professionals around the country, to advance that local perspective – to ensure the consumer is accurately informed, to educate ourselves so we can comport ourselves to the best of our ability and truly provide the service buyers and sellers need.
Our industry is fraught with negativity and disillusionment. While to some extent our own fault, it is also a pervasive public response to dramatic market shifts, job losses, and economic distress as well. We have the power to help, and to alter that perception.
Real estate professionals will thrive if they demonstrate their local expertise.
And the buying and selling public will benefit, too.
