Debbie Reynolds is sponsoring the 12-day Thanksgiving Post Challenge, that began November 12 and will end on Thanksgiving Day with opportunities for us to share why we are thankful and for what! There are some wonderful posts being shared, so take time to read and comment on what others are thankful for!

Terramar Beach in Carlsbad

Carlsbad has about 7 miles of gorgeous beaches for visitors and residents to enjoy year-round, and I appreciate them all and the lifestyle they afford. I’ve spend most of my life near beaches, including having a vacation beach home on the water in the past, and would find it hard to be far away from them, although I don’t necessarily want to live right on the beach for a host of reasons.

One of the things I really appreciate about the Carlsbad beaches is accessibility. Other than several pay lots at the state beaches, parking is free along the coast road and in adjacent neighborhoods so anyone can park and enjoy the beach. This is a big shift from our experiences back when living in Boston with parking either limited to residents with passes or really expensive parking lots. The beaches in Carlsbad are NOT limited to the fortunate few who can afford to live next to the beach, but to anyone, resident OR visitor.

You do have to be prepared in some cases to access certain beaches via stairs so those with physical issues or special needs will find access more difficult. Moonlight Beach in Encinitas does have mats leading to the beach that allow access to those with canes, walkers and wheelchairs; I also understand they have some special beach wheelchairs.

There’s something very tranquil about the beach, even when crowded on our summer holidays, and I find it immediately relaxing to take walks or even just to drive along going to and from appointments or to stop for a few moments at sunset to enjoy nature’s beauty. And I am thankful whenever I take a few moments with my camera to take photos to enjoy the beauty.

Sunset Watching in Carlsbad

I’m thankful daily on being able to enjoy a lifestyle by the beach and to enjoy all that the beaches offer that suit my style and personality. That, so far, does NOT extend to surfing! LOL. And I’m grateful to be able to help others find their lifestyle and home by the beaches.

I would be remiss if I did not mention all that is done on an on-going basis to help preserve our ocean and our beaches, because of Mother Nature and human carelessness, so everyone can enjoy them safely. I’m thankful for the private, city, county, and state organizations committed to keeping beaches in Carlsbad clean, and to cope with erosion and related issues like bluff collapse and sea caves that have occurred in several areas.

This is not necessarily an exhaustive list but the organizations that come to mind that deserve our thank you’s include the Surfing Madonna Oceans Project, the Surfrider Organization, the California Coastal Commission, San Diego Coastkeeper, I Love a Clean Ocean, and the Department of Parks and Recreation.
