Blog Topics I Write About and Don’t
I believe most blog writers have topics they like to write about, and those they don’t.
A recent article by Richard Weisser, “Sorry, I don’t Comment on Posts About…” got me thinking about my own posts, and what I like, and don’t like, to write about. Read it – it’s a good one!
I enjoy writing about many things, but most of my favorite topics are related to the community I live and nearby areas. These include dining and shopping options, local fairs and festivals, concerts, tourist attractions, things to do (hiking, beaches, sunset viewing), local businesses and services, and so on.
Understanding the housing market is key, especially with my focus on relocations, so I also write about the neighborhoods and housing options that are available, plus monthly updates on what is happening with regard to sales and inventory in the real estate market I generally work in.
I also like to write about issues that impact buyers and sellers, things they should know about (e.g., taxes), services I provide, and similar topics And from time to time I talk about my personal life – things I enjoy doing, travel, family events and more.
There are certain topics I simply don’t care to write about for personal reasons. Others just don’t fit into my model of business and my blogging strategy. You may feel differently, and that’s fine.
Here they are in no particular order.
Politics:
I have my own political beliefs, as we all do, but I don’t see any value to getting into sharing my beliefs or proselytizing. We certainly hear enough on the media, especially these days, and I’ll leave it at that. It’s never come up as an issue with clients and I don’t believe my beliefs impact my ability to do my job. Strong opposing opinions with a client could become an issue, I suppose, but we’ll cross that bridge if we come to it. But it doesn’t need to be part of my marketing strategy. Others have their opinions.
Sex:
This gets to be a dicey area, can easily offend, and I stray from getting into discussions on-line or writing about it. My writing here about sex is all you’re going to get. Sorry to disappoint you. That includes jokes, especially off-color ones (and I do know a few). Which brings me to another topic.
Jokcs:
For one thing they are discouraged here. But I personally don’t feel they are appropriate for blogging, at least for me. You never know who you might offend. And while I do love a good joke, and happily appreciate them away from my posts, sharing jokes here just isn’t in my game plan. But I will share my sense of humor, which can be a bit dry at times, and not without some sarcasm, as you may already know.
Religion:
Too personal, and, like politics, can sometimes be a hotbed of discussion and disagreement, and it just doesn’t fit with my blogging model.
There you have it – my likes and dislikes.
Anything YOU like to talk about, or stray away from?

More importantly, with my focus on relocation (been there done that 4 major times) it was obvious I had to really get to know the area, with buyers from other locales asking specific and general questions. Writing localism posts (well before Localism here on AR was created), based on research and traveling around, was the best way to get to know the area.
