Carlsbad Real Estate News and Views

Here's the REAL scoop on living in Carlsbad ~ beaches, things to do, places to eat, community events, and of course neighborhoods, homes and the Carlsbad real estate market in general, including surrounding communities like Encinitas, Cardiff, San Marcos, Oceanside, Solana Beach and Del Mar.

Do You Write For Your Readers or For Yourself?

I have a Question -

Do You Write For Your Readers or For Yourself?

We all know, or have been told, that you need to write for your audience. So you need to think about what that audience might be. Sometimes when you are starting out the target audience is not clear.

But you can't be everything to everyone, nor should you even try.

Are you writing for yourself or for your readers?I suspect many who are starting out don't make an effort to focus their writing - I know I didn't. Perhaps you aren't thinking it might be important, or maybe aren't sure who your target audience ought to be. That's pretty normal.

But unless you are writing just to hear yourself "talk," you should think about your readers and write about what will interest them, and not just what interests you. Generating real estate business IS part of being here.

Does that mean not writing about things that get you jazzed up?

Certainly not. After all, part of the fun and enjoyment of blogging IS writing about the topics that interest us. It's so much easier than blogging about stuff you don't enjoy, and that positive attitude will likely be reflected in your writing.

So how do you know what your readers want and what they are reading?

And are the posts YOU think are popular the ones that really are?

Analytics, my friend.

I often find some posts I believe are going to be popular aren't. And sometimes I'm surprised at the posts that get the most clicks. What do I know?!

AR provides an easy way to look at what's getting read, or at least clicked on. Of course one gauge is the number and types of comments, but most commentary seems to come from other AR members so that won't be very helpful if you want to know about the consumer. The statistics page tells you what you need to know.

To check on your statistics:

Click on MY HOME (top of the nav bar), then STATISTICS on the left (the last section of navigation links). Look at CLICKS, not VIEWS.

Gateway to the coastal community of EncinitasI find that community profiles get the most clicks over time - folks who are moving want to know about different communities and the housing (usually 8,000 - 12,000+ clicks over time - an early community post on Carlsbad has 12,847 clicks).

Market reports also tend to generate a fair amount of interest. Certain topics, like short sales, tend to garner a lot of clicking - my post about buying a short sale from January 2007 has over 76,000 clicks. It was also plagiarized about a dozen times (but I caught ‘em!).

All of this provides some good information about topics that are of interest to consumers who may be buying or selling, now or in the future.

Another option is to simply ask folks what they want to hear about...a buyer or seller client, for example. Who knows what you might learn?

I still write about a lot of things that interest me, assuming that others will find them of interest too. But the majority of my writing is geared toward providing information and resources for folks potentially needing help with their real estate needs.

How about you?
