We have followed a tradition of making an old German cookie recipe, Honey Lebkuchen, at Christmas time every year for 30+ years.
That's about 450 DOZEN cookies. It tends to be a big tradition in my wife's side of the family with most taking part and passing the tradition on to the kids (our older daughter, who just got married, made them with her husband for the first time this year - they were terrific). The recipe has been passed along for generations which makes it that much more interesting and fun.
The slide show details the primary steps of the recipe, which is not hard to mix up (other than getting 15+ cups of flour into the dough; this provides a workout for the heartiest of souls) but the final product really can vary depending on the talents of the person rolling out the dough and cutting the cookies.
Some of the family (who shall remain nameless) cut corners - they know who they are but still claim theirs are the best. We all know, of course, that ours, probably in most years, ARE the best since we follow the recipe religiously, and quite frankly just do a better job of it. Some disagree - we ignore them, since they are biased and clearly are jealous of our greater culinary expertise and unwillingness to substitute ingredients. LOL
The cookies are best if stored for a few weeks and traditionally are made right after Thanksgiving. Of course you have to test some of them before Christmas to make sure they are seasoning appropriately. And we do share with other family members (and friends) and critique each others' creations. Of course since ours ARE the best it is all pointless and harmless fun. And year after year we shake our heads in amazement at other family members who simply cannot acknowledge the inferior quality of their Lebkuchen.
Since the recipe normally makes about 12 - 14 dozen you can snack a bit and not have to worry about running out before Christmas (I'm due for another one now since I'm enjoying my evening coffee), but it's a lot of work and no one want to make a second batch.
