The Art of the Handwritten Thank You Note
We've all heard, or most have, that there's something special about a handwritten "thank you" in today's age of email, texting, voice mail and mass produced newsletters and postcards.
We all get bombarded with what I call artificial or impersonal communication, standing over the circular inbox to file it or tapping the delete key to make it go away. Admit it - you do that don't you?
It's likely most of this form of communication makes less impact than we would hope, and our well-intentioned efforts may be met with a ho hum or perhaps no reaction at all.
I am doing more and more with handwritten cards, although they are something I have always done.
- A note to a vendor
- A thank you to an escrow or title person for their assistance
- A note of appreciation to the agent on the other side of the transactional fence, letting them know how much I appreciated their professionalism
- Coupled with a gift, a major thank you to the client for the pleasure of doing business with them and best wishes in their new home (the note with the Key on it is for giving to new home owners with their new keys inside)
You get the idea, I assume.
A personal handwritten note shows you care, and that you have taken a few moments to show your appreciation for something someone has done, whether significant or not.
And a thank you note in your own hand makes someone take notice amidst all the other paper garbage they receive daily. They may even open your note first. And they will remember.
What's important is that you made the effort, and thought enough of what they did to write, and not what you actually say. A couple of minutes and you have made an impression no text, voice mail or email can make.
Are you taking advantage of the art of the handwritten thank you note?

It occurred to me, upon reflecting on some recent experiences, that there are probably things we should say, but we don't. And not just in business.
"I'm sorry," or "I Apologize."
