Don't Make Them Feel Stupid!!

Don't Make Them Feel Stupid!!

Don't be stupidIt ought to be a cardinal rule - don't make them feel stupid

But no doubt we all do it on occasion, although not intentionally.

Most of us have been made to feel stupid by someone else at one time or another - a vendor, a retailer, someone in authority, a rude customer service rep. Not cool.

We often hear, and perhaps tell our clients and prospects, that "there's no such thing as a stupid question." That very well may be true.

But while we may believe it, I think sometimes we do or say things that just might make them feel stupid anyhow. [photo courtesy of hiddedevries on Flickr]

It may a subtle nuance in the voice, or a look you give them without realizing it when answering a question. Or perhaps ignoring what they said.

But more often it might be the way in which you respond, or even the way you phrase a question

A few examples:

"We already talked about that, don't you remember?" Possibly any response with "don't you remember?" has a subtle implication that ain't so nice, at least if the tone of your voice implies so.

"Why do you want to know?" or "Why are you asking?" at least in the wrong tone, carries a potential implied notion that they are asking a dumb question. Like, why in the world would you be asking that?! Certainly understanding the client's or prospect's viewpoint has value, since the obvious answer from your perspective may not be so obvious to the client.  JUSt be careful how you ask!

Avoid the use of real estate lingo. We us it all the time, but most consumers aren't familiar with much of the terminology we banter about. Using these terms as if you expect buyers and sellers to know might make them feel dumb, or at least ill-informed. You didn't used to know what they meant either, did you?!

It's also possible that not answering questions you are asked, apart from being rude, may carry a subtle implication that you don't feel their question is worthy of a response. If you don't know the answer, say so and let them know you will get the answer. And don't forget to do so and follow-up.

 Don't make them feel stupid.

Even if they ask YOU questions that make you feel stupid.

I'm an Internet Consultant, Not a Telemarketer...There's a Difference

It's inevitable that when I am real freaking busy I get the calls I don't want. You too? Sort of a Murphy's Law kind of thing.

Some calls I never want. But sometimes I get caught unawares. It happened yesterday.

Are you an automaton?A voice mail popped up on my laptop when I was on another call (that's Voice Cloud working). It was from a woman named S----- who was "just on your website and have a few questions. Please call me when you can." Cool. That sounds like someone who needed help. Out of state number...perhaps a relo?

Rang up the number and got a woman who was clearly engaged in a loud conversation with a co-worker and couldn't bother to say hello. Not sure why she answered since she was clearly busy with something more important than answering my call.

I knew immediately it was a company, not a private number, but, heck, some consumers call when they are at work. She never even said the name of the company. Baaaad first impression. I should have hung up, but asked for S-----.

S----- came on the phone and politely asked how my day was going. Up went the red flag, and the hair on my neck. "I was looking at your website and see you are all over the place..." OK tell me something I don't know. Of course it's the perfect and standard lead-in.

And it sounded like a a script - she was an automaton!

I interrupted and said "So you are a telemarketer?!"

"No, I'm an Internet Consultant...There's a Difference."

Hmmm, really? Maybe in YOUR mind, but in my feeble brain what it means is...you are calling me to sell me a product or service that I don't want or need and I will have to listen to you blathering on if I don't get off the phone. So the result is the same.

I admit I was pretty riled up because of all that was going on, and I was ticked that I had actually returned a call that was a complete waste of time when I was really busy. So I said so.

While I felt a brief pang of guilt after I said "Thank you but I'm not interested" rather tersely and hung up, once again I felt snookered by a "Internet Consultant" who didn't bother to really say where she was calling from, knowing full well I wouldn't call back if she had. Guilt gone. That was the second call of the day. Thankfully I ignored the other - that was the 5th one of the week.

And then there's that Do Not Call List, of which I am a member. Hmmm

It made me reflect, though.

Are there possibly times when WE act similarly when following up on possible leads and say things that immediately put consumers on the defensive. They DON'T want or need to be sold. We need to make sure  we are there to help, provide information, and answer their questions. and not waste their time or make them feel pressured or stupid. Yes, they called you. BUT don't sound like an automaton with a script. Folks can tell.  And they won't like it any more than you would.

It's something to keep in mind.

What is the person's perspective on the other end of the phone.
