Every now and then superstitions enter our business, sometimes in ways we don't expect. They don't necessarily prevent things from moving ahead but it's always interesting to hear about the things that folks are superstitious about.
A couple of example - I bet you all have some stories to share.
I had a buyer a number of years ago from the Caribbean - I don't recall where. We toured a good number of homes in the Cambridge area and there was one property on a dead end street she was interested in seeing.
No way, she said, once she saw the dead end sign. Her comment was that she would never live on a street where there was a sign that mentioned the dead.
Just recently I had a list of properties from a buyer client that was of interest. We went to see it, although the street address was 6666 (not quite 666 but close) and the unit was #13, and he mentioned that it might not be a lucky house. Didn't fit the bill. [photo courtesy of Sister72on Flickr]
But I can imagine some really superstitious folks not going anywhere near that property.
Folks have been spooked by the #13 for years. There have been lots of buildings built without a 13th floor (check the elevator) although that seems less common these days.
I had a buyer I was showing property to who spied a black cat sitting outside the unit we were going to see. Nope, that went off the list immediately.
I've not had any issues with haunted or supposedly haunted houses but I know others have (Mary Pope-Handy has a great blog about haunted houses up in her neck of the woods as well as tales about other haunted properties).
