How Many Things to Do Are There in YOUR Community? I Bet There are 365
Writing about things to do in your community will generate interest in your blog and bring you traffic, and business.
We all know the value of hyperlocal posts; many writers here on AR are masters. And there is no shortage of things you can write about in your community.
The 365 Things to Do in ____ (your community) notion has become incredibly popular and spread throughout the blogosphere, with a host of variations, over the last 1+ years with literally hundreds of Things to Do sites.
The thought of writing 1 hyperlocal post per day is daunting. Lots of writers get started, only to abandon their efforts, as bloggers often do, and blogs and Facebook business pages sit idle. Those that stick with it sometimes develop large followings (Dale Chumbley in Vancouver WA has over 14,000 Facebook fans, as just one example).
This post was inspired by a series of email exchanges with Stacie Wells in Augusta, a friend of mine and fellow CRS, with the intent of generating discussion and ideas around the 365 Things to Do phenomenon. Pros and cons; to do's and not to do's.
365 Things to Do is trendy, and some suggest the popularity is waning. The name itself perhaps is limiting, since it implies a finite set of articles about a certain area, destined to end after 1 year or 365 posts, whichever comes first.
But it doesn't have to. As Stacy said (this is PERFECT, in my opinion)...
"In my thinking, the goal of this is to be a resource to people not only when they're buying/selling, but potentially everyday in between... I just like to think in terms of being a community ambassador."
Some writers focus on specific events that are time sensitive. A fair, an art opening, you get the idea.
Others share more enduring information - restaurants, galleries, touristy stuff, retail, and local landmarks that are always there to enjoy. I do this myself because it interests locals, visitors, and those who are relocating to the area.
Some thoughts:
- If you are going to jump on the 365 Things to Do in ______ bandwagon stick with it
- Focus on things to do that enduring (shops, galleries, touristy stuff) but a few events, especially those that happen every year, like a fair, are good too
- Make up a separate business card with your website name, including Facebook, and your contact information to share with others. And how about creating some stickers?
- Set up a Facebook page - get 25 fans and give it a unique URL. Stacy's thought was NOT 365 Things to Do but something more long lasting. I agree.
- Buy a 365 website of some sort for marketing (365 Things to Do in ____, or ___365, etc.)
- It's OK to not have a post EVERY single day, unless guilt will consume you.
Anyone?

Ice skating is likely NOT the first thing that comes to mind when you hear "Southern California," even in the winter. I think of Maine, Minnesota, Michigan, Massachusetts, and other non-M states that get REALLY cold. REALLY!
