Bonding with Your New House – A Special Moment

You've Closed on Your New House

Now it's Time to Bond!

A special moment arrives for most buyers when you become the new owner. You might get a call from your agent that you are the new homeowner, or you might be sitting around the closing table signing documents when it finally happens. Depends on how things work in your area.

You’ve been anticipating this for a long time, with a wide range of emotions…not just weeks, but perhaps months, or longer.

animated heartsBut when it’s official you are the new owner, it’s a very special moment indeed. It might take a few minutes to get used to the idea…that the house you fell in love with, made an offer on, and stressed over for weeks during inspections, due diligence, the appraisal, and loan approval, is now really yours. And now you can move in.

Now it’s time to bond with your new house that will become your home – filled with memories, friends, and all that makes it special to you. It happens with each buyer in a different way, but that special moment when you walk in your front door as the new owner can be hard to put into words. It really IS yours!! And you’ve earned that special time

.

Do you walk through the house, planning what to put where?

Does it look and feel different now that it’s empty and YOU own it?

Do you bring a chair (as I have seen buyers do) and sit in the living room, or perhaps on the front or back porch?

Do you bring a bottle of wine or champagne to toast your new home?

I’ve know a number of buyers who started moving in that very day that closing occurred, and were able to sleep in their own beds. That’s some heavy-duty bonding.

Sometimes bonding can’t begin right away. You might have bought a second home and aren’t physically here when closing happens. Or perhaps you agreed on a rent back for the sellers after closing to help cinch the deal and will be acting as landlord til they move out.

Woman unpacking in her new homeThere’s a ton of work ahead moving into your new home, unpacking and finding places for everything (or perhaps getting rid of some things), learning your way around the community, getting accustomed to new sounds and a new routine. You might want to read What Should I Expect Now That I’ve Closed on My Home for some things to think about.

So take a few moments, however you wish, to bond a little with your new home. Yes, it’s a busy time but enjoy a few minutes to appreciate what you have just been through, and celebrate homeownership!
