Voters to Decide on 3 Californias on November 2018 Ballot
Will there be 3 Californias in our future?
I suspect many feel 1 is enough...but not everyone
Voters will get to vote on an intriguing, and controversial, measure, in addition to voting for governor and multiple other political races on the November 2018 ballot.
The “CAL 3” initiative, spearheaded and financed by Timothy Draper, a billionaire venture capitalist, received more than the required number of valid state signatures – over 400,000 - to be placed on the ballot November 6.
Briefly, Cal 3 proposes the California government be divided into 3 separate entities – the names for the new “states” would be Southern California, California, and Northern California, or other names selected by the residents.
But a vote in favor of the split is not the final word by far - dividing into 3 states would require approval by Congress, among other legal hurdles before getting even to that point.
Proponents of the ballot measure say the split would result in better education, an improved government infrastructure and lower taxes.
But critics are quick to point out many potential issues, not the least of which are political. In addition, Southern Californians, for example, might then need to pay out of state tuition at many other California universities. Corporations with multiple facilities in 2 or 3 states could have new and different corporate tax structures. And our water resources, and costs, already a hot topic, could become more contentious across state lines. The list goes on.
Personally I can’t see this getting approved. But it’s a major step that it’s even getting to the ballot for voters to react.
