Throwback Thursday: Canyon Animals at our House

Roadrunner by our house in Carlsbad

Our house backs up to a canyon, which not surprisingly means plenty of wildlife. Perhaps not as exciting as what some of your might have near where you live.

This roadrunner was back the other day and for the first time we actually hear the sound it makes. No, NOT meep meep, or beep beep, but a series of coos. According to Google the coos mean the male is calling its mate and marking its territory. It was fun to see it again running around and up on the fence cooing.

The skunk, alas, has returned to our back yard - we first saw one last summer. My wife went out 2 nights ago to listen to the frogs and heard this rustling in the plants on the other side of our fence. Thankfully she quickly realized what it was and popped back in the house. The skunk was not deterred by turning on the outdoor lights nor banging on the window, and came through the wrought-iron fence, strolled around the patio, then took a walk down the side yard - I couldn't get to my camera fast enough, unfortunately. And it was back the next night. No doubt, she or he will continue to visit whenever she or he wants.

We often hear coyotes - sometimes just 1 but other times a pack of them. Occasionally we see one on the hillside or walking down the paved access road behind our house. A bobcat has been spotted in the area, too, but we've not seen it.

Birds are abundant, too, some noisier than others - crows, quail, scrub jays, sparrows, orioles, veerios, hummers, goldfinches, grosbeaks, mourning doves, owls, thrashers, and probably some others I don't recognize.

And we have the seasonal Pacific Tree frogs, as well. This video (nothing to see, just listen) was from mid February although they are still around now and then.

And we've seen a rattlesnake or two down on the access road, too! And rabbits and ground squirrels.
