Hiking Trails in Carlsbad
Volunteers Needed for Trail Cleanups Q1 & Q2 2018
We are indeed fortunate that Carlsbad has an abundance of hiking trails, about 50 miles of them, with more being planned. Some residents and visitors may not even be aware of this huge network of trails.
Of course walking along or on our beautiful beaches is a treat, but there are plentiful other walking options scattered around town for all ability levels.
The Carlsbad website has a complete list of hiking trails plus you can print maps for both North and South Carlsbad hiking trails. The City also provides videos about a few of the trails
Carlsbad’s hiking trails appeal to just about every hiker, given the wide range of distances and the variation in difficulty. While some of our Carlsbad trails are paved, others are not, and some are wheelchair accessible. You’ll also find that those living in a number of master planned communities (e.g., Bressi Ranch, La Costa Greens, Rancho Carrillo) have trails to enjoy, too.
A personal favorite of mine is along the Batiquitos Lagoon in the Aviara area of South Carlsbad. And a hike up Mount Calavera in the Calavera Hills area, with marvelous 360 degree views, is a good one too, although much more vigorous than the walk around Lake Calavera nearby.
Carlsbad holds a number of trail cleanup events during the year, and volunteers are always needed to help keep our trails in great shape for all to enjoy. The City provides a work plan and also safety training at the beginning of each of these trail cleanup events.
The first clean-up was already held on February 10th, but volunteers are needed for the following Trail Cleanup Events for the first half of 2018. The clean-ups start at 8:30 am, and gloves and closed-toe shoes are recommended; water and snacks are provided.
March 24 – the Rancho Carrillo Trail
April 28 – Arbor Day Event
May 12 – Kelly Trail
June 2 – National Trails Day at Carlsbad Oak Business Park
There are plenty of hiking trail volunteer opportunities, including Trail Captain, Trail Maintenance, working on the newsletter, Native Habitat Restoration, trail construction, and trail markers/signage installation.
You can learn more about being a volunteer by attending one of the quarterly Trail Volunteer Meetings. The next meeting is June 7 at 5 pm at the Carlsbad Senior Center at 799 Pine Avenue in the Village.
You can learn more about volunteer opportunities in Carlsbad on the city website page for volunteers. Interested residents may also either call 760-434-2929 or email Volunteers@CarlsbadCa.gov.
