Growth in Carlsbad Since 2005
My Perspective on the Changes
My wife and I were driving back from an appointment in La Jolla yesterday, and took a more scenic route once we got off the freeway in South Carlsbad. At one point she made the comment about how much things have changed since we moved here in April 2005.
It got me thinking, so I decided to try to make a list of some of what’s changed as far as Carlsbad’s growth. It’s pretty impressive and easily several thousand housing units have been built, among other development in our city of about 114,000 (it was, I believe, under 100,000 when we moved here).
No doubt I am missing some things, but there clearly has been a lot we’ve seen change in our 12 years here, not to mention living in 3 different houses! And much of this is included here on my Activerain blog.
Master Planned Communities Built:
La Costa Greens (majority of the homes were built in 2005 and later)
La Costa Ridge
Bressi Ranch (including affordable homes at Mulberry; most built in 2005/later)
The Foothills at Carlsbad (4 villages)
Calavera Hills (multiple villages)
Robertson Ranch (under construction – was agricultural land)
The Preserve (under construction – was vacant land)
La Costa Oaks (villages along Rancho Santa Fe Road)
SummerHouse Condos in Carlsbad Village
Lanai, Arterro, The Tides, The Bay Collection, Casero, The Bluffs (condos), SummerHouse Condos and Seagrove Condos (Carlsbad Village). La Costa Collection (townhomes), Southern Preserve, Montecina, Vista Del Mar, Poinsettia Ridge, Costa Pointe Luxury Apartments (La Costa) and other small complexes
Part of the Carlsbad Safety Training Center for Fire, Police, Utility Workers, First Responders
Other Growth and Development:
Sage Creek High School, Poinsettia Elementary School, La Costa Towne Square (mall), Bressi Village Shopping Center including the Boys and Girls Club of Carlsbad, Bressi Ranch Corporate Center, StorQuest Self Storage at Bressi Ranch, Lowes (built on the land of the former Olympic Resort), Multiple Corporate Office buildings including Scripps Coastal Medical Center, Alga Norte Community Park with a large aquatic center;
Aquatic Center at the Alga Norte Community Park
Sheraton Hotel, Cape Rey Resort (Hilton), El Camino Real widened for about a 2 mile stretch between College and Chestnut in North Carlsbad, significant growth at Legoland including a new hotel, The Crossings (public golf course - SEE TOP PHOTO FOR CLUBHOUSE), Hilton Grand Vacations Club at Marbrisa (by the Sheraton) – ongoing development, the Carlsbad Desalination Plant, new restaurants – remodeled space for Campfire, Baba (coffee shop) and Carruth Cellars Urban Winery & Tasting Room - all in the Village, among others;
ViaSat (global broadband services and technology company) building on El Camino, and a new Viasat Campus being built on El Camino Real, Park 101 restaurant complex in the Village (opened July 2017), ActivCare Senior Living Facility in Bressi Ranch, the Safety Training Center in central Carlsbad with new firehouse, new firehouse by The Foothills, Skate Park by the Safety Training Center
Growth that didn’t happen – the large luxury mall and open space development adjacent to the Agua Hedionda lagoon that was voted down by residents! Good move in my opinion.
Is there more to come? You bet.
I know of a number of building projects, much of it residential (e.g., Lennar development in Aviara along an extension of Poinsettia to be built; residential communities in the Sunny Creek area by Rancho Carlsbad; a new apartment complex off Carlsbad Village Drive just west of the 5 on current site of Denny’s), that are in the review and approval process, including detached homes, condos, townhomes, and senior and affordable housing. There are some commercial projects, too.
Stay tuned for updates as new, and approved, residential and commercial projects are announced.
