The Windmill Food Hall is Open in Carlsbad 2019
Carlsbad’s iconic windmill is turning again, after what seemed like well over a year of standing still.
The windmill, built in 1982, is the site of what was once Pea Soup Andersen’s (that closed and later became TGI Friday’s) and now signals something else…the Windmill Food Hall, the first food hall in North San Diego County.
The windmill and adjacent buildings (the hotel) were also repainted a dark gray…or is it black…with white trim, and a big change from the blue but rather appealing.
Plans for the Windmill Food Hall have been in the works for some time, and there were a number of delays with construction, but the facility finally opened over Labor Day weekend, although there is still some exterior work going on at one end of the facility outside.
The Windmill Food Hall and entertainment area offer 14 unique places to eat (some already restaurants elsewhere, some new fixtures of farmers market vendors) in a casual, and fun setting just off the I-5 freeway adjacent to the Carlsbad by the Sea Hotel.
Not only is the Windmill Food Hall convenient for those staying at the hotel, but it’s close to a large office park above the Flower Fields along Armada Drive, as well as for shoppers at the Carlsbad Premium Outlets Mall right down the street, those traveling along the freeway. And when the Flower Fields are open in March, April and May this will be a great location to eat, right across the street.
The Windmill Food Hall is a 12,000 sf facility with a full bar that is huge, with indoor and outdoor seating so you can enjoy our beautiful weather, and a number of arcade games to entertain the kids, young and old.
Want to sit and relax? There are multiple comfy places to sit in a communal setting (e.g., a library, an arcade game area) and a wide range of food styles starting with breakfast all the way through dinner and beyond - tacos, steak, seafood, stir fry, sliders and salads, Thai, Pho, a bread and cheese place, pizza, chicken and beer, desserts and coffee, poke, and more.
I’ve heard the Windmill Food Hall will offer a range of entertainment and education offered to make this a fun place to visit and not just for a quick bit - live music, line dancing, pop-up artisans (like the Carlsbad Cookie Company on 10/27 from 11 - 2: their cookies are delish!!), yoga, and who knows what else. Check the website for events!
No doubt the owner will be testing out different things to see what works to bring in the customers and keep them happy! It will be fun to see how this place grows as more and more discover it! Today was my first visit and I know I will check it out again!
Windmill Food Hall is located at 890 Palomar Airport Road (but enter off of Paseo del Norte, heading north toward the Carlsbad Premium Outlets Mall) across from Armstrong Gardens.
Coffee is available 7 - 5; the vendors are open 11 - 9, with some open (with the bar) until 12 am.
