Carlsbad Real Estate News and Views

Here's the REAL scoop on living in Carlsbad ~ beaches, things to do, places to eat, community events, and of course neighborhoods, homes and the Carlsbad real estate market in general, including surrounding communities like Encinitas, Cardiff, San Marcos, Oceanside, Solana Beach and Del Mar.

Where do I Go for Water Sports and Activities in Carlsbad?

Water Sports and Activities in Carlsbad

Where and What?

Being in an area where our weather is pretty darn nice all year round affords visitors and residents the opportunity to enjoy water sports and beach activities all year round. Yes, there are times when the weather is not the best, but overall we really have nothing to complain about.

Lots of visitors and residents enjoy water sports, and there are certainly plenty of them to enjoy here in Carlsbad. So where do you go to enjoy them?

First of all, for those who might not know we have about 7 miles of continuous beach. It’s free (unless you choose to park at one of the state beach parking lots…but why do that other than for convenience?!) and there’s lots to do.

Surfing in Carlsbad

Of course it’s BYOB – bring your own board – but you have the flexibility to do pretty much what you want. Stand-up paddle boarding, surfing, swimming, boogie boarding, wind-surfing (may be a bit more challenging if the winds aren’t great), and kayaking are readily at your disposal pretty much anywhere along the Carlsbad.

Be aware there are some areas that limit swimming, and surfing, and not all have lifeguards. Because of the bluffs some beaches are a bit more challenging to get to and parking is more limited. But a walk is good exercise, right?

There are other options, too, for jet skies and those sorts of things.

Carlsbad has 3 lagoons, but only the inner area of the Agua Hedionda Lagoon (east of the 5 freeway) allows water activities and boating.

Carlsbad Lagoon WatersportsCheck out Carlsbad Lagoon for waverunner, powerboat, waterski, aqua cycle, canoe, peddle boat, stand-up paddle board, and kayak rentals.

There’s a lot of activity there on the lagoon on busy days, especially in the summer and on the weekends. New paddle-boarders will want to steer away from all the waves!

Are you interested in learning how to paddle board? Well, 2 Stand-up Guys in Carlsbad will provide a board, paddle and life jacket, and lessons, too! They’ll teach you how to paddle board at 2 locations (both flat water – you don’t want to start on the ocean) – Carlsbad Lagoon and Mission Bay (down town).

beacy volleyball in CarlsbadNot everyone is a water-sport enthusiast, but there are plenty of other options – walking the beach, running, flying kites, or just sitting and relaxing.

For those who enjoy beach volleyball there are several beaches with nets set up including the beach adjacent to the Village and at South Ponto.

You’ll also find yoga on the beach at Frazee Beach by the Village, where Pine Avenue ends at the Coast Road by the paid parking area. Seems like it’s most weekends.

Sunset watching in CarlsbadOne last activity you might enjoy near or on the water is sunset watching. On any given day in Carlsbad there are lots of people out watching from a variety of vantage points to see the sun slip below the horizon and enjoy the colors in the sky.

Here’s my list of the best places for sunset watching (not all are in Carlsbad). The post was from 2008 but I think it’s still a good one! Maybe it's time for me to hunt down some other good sunset-watching spots!
