Measure A Voted Down by Carlsbad Residents
Carlsbadians took to the polls on February 23rd to vote yes or no on Measure A, and in a fairly narrow margin voted NO.
While there are reportedly 300 provisional ballots (mail-ins to be verified) still to be counted, NOs outpaced the YESs by 52% vs. 48%, with a historically strong turnout of registered voters, as of thos morning.
Measure A, or the Agua Hedionda 85/15 Plan as it was known early on, has been controversial from the very beginning. At the heart of the plan was a proposed 500,000+ SF mega mall by the Agua Hedionda lagoon to be developed by Caruso Affiliated, developer of The Grove in LA and several other large retail complexes.
While Measure A was originally approved by the City Council last summer rather than via an election, significant grass roots efforts by concerned citizens, Citizens for North County, led to a referendum being approved last fall which resulted in this special voter election.
Caruso conceded defeat in the election yesterday, in this 10 News report, despite the final tally not being announced.
