A number of La Costa Carlsbad residents are up in arms.
The reason is the new La Costa Town Square that has been approved by the City of Carlsbad to be built at the intersection of Rancho Santa Fe Road and La Costa Avenue in southeast Carlsbad.

I had reported earlier that Carlsbad officials had given the go ahead, but it seems many Carlsbad and Encinitas residents in the area are not happy about this. There have been groups of protestors at the site on more than one occasion.
There is also now a lawsuit brought against the City of Carlsbad which says that the city did not comply with the California Environmental Quality Act nor consider, appropriately, the environmental impacts of this substantial development.
While the La Costa Town Square has been part of the plans for many years, concerns are that things are different now in terms of the volume of traffic, noise and other issues. La Costa Avenue and Rancho Santa Fe Road are main thorough-fares and folks are concerned about more traffic and continued high speeds in these roads which has resulted in a number of accidents, as well as worries about more large delivery truck using La Costa Avenue which has weight limits for trucks that are ignored.
Area residents are also worried that a big box store will end up at the 100,000 SF building that is part of the shopping center; officials say that the conditions of approval for tenants with restrictions on floor space for non-taxable items and other issues will prevent such stores from being suitable.
Time will tell where this ends up. Mediation is next, but if that does not resolve matters the court will intervene.
