Cannon Art Gallery in Carlsbad, CA - Last Art Exhibit of 2010 at the William D. Cannon Gallery
"DeLoss McGraw: Recent Paintings in Response to Günter Grass's The Tin Drum"
The Cannon Art Gallery is a gem in Carlsbad, indeed in North San Diego County, and one of the reasons Carlsbad has such a great reputation for embracing the arts.
Featuring emerging and well-established artists of regional, national and international acclaim is just one reason Carlsbad is so fortunate to have the city-owned William D. Cannon Art Gallery.
The second, of course, is curator/director Karen McGuire, who puts it all together with great success every time, from juried shows to international traveling exhibitions.
The last art exhibit of 2010 at the Cannon Art Gallery opened November 21, 2010 and ended today, January 16, 2011 (sorry, you will just have to enjoy the slideshow). Large-scale works by DeLoss McGraw, inspired by "The Tin Drum" by Günter Grass, are dramatic, colorful, even whimsical, with some intriguing, and dark, messages that may not be readily apparent.
McGraw's earlier work was exhibited at the Cannon Art Gallery inauguration 10 years ago, so it was fitting to have new works featured on the 10 year anniversary.
The Red Orchestra ("Die Rote Kapelle") series of small pieces is especially noteworthy.
The Red Orchestra, so named by the Gestapo of Nazi Germany was an anti-Nazi resistance movement in Berlin. Many of the Red Orchestra's members were supposedly executed or sent to concentration camps. McGraw's small paintings are a poignant reminder of Nazi Germany adn those who sought to defeat it.
Here's a short list of some of the exhibits Carlsbad's Cannon Art Gallery has had in the last couple of years, with some terrific photos.

Carlsbad continues to grow in reputation as a town that celebrates the arts. We have a ways to go to before we can truly be considered an arts destination, but there is much to celebrate about the arts in Carlsbad, and the growing Carlsbad Arts District.
