"DeLoss McGraw: Recent Paintings in Response to Günter Grass's The Tin Drum

Cannon Art Gallery in Carlsbad featuring DeLoss McGrawThe Cannon Art Gallery is a gem in Carlsbad, indeed in North San Diego County, and one of the reasons Carlsbad has such a great reputation for embracing the arts.

Featuring emerging and well-established artists of regional, national and international acclaim is just one reason Carlsbad is so fortunate to have the city-owned William D. Cannon Art Gallery

The second, of course, is curator/director Karen McGuire, who puts it all together with great success every time, from juried shows to international traveling exhibitions.

The last art exhibit of 2010 at the Cannon Art Gallery opened November 21, 2010 and ended today, January 16, 2011 (sorry, you will just have to enjoy the slideshow).  Large-scale works by DeLoss McGraw, inspired by "The Tin Drum" by Günter Grass, are dramatic, colorful, even whimsical, with some intriguing, and dark, messages that may not be readily apparent.

DeLoss McGraw art exhibit at the William D. Cannon Art Gallery in Carlsbad CAMcGraw's earlier work was exhibited at the Cannon Art Gallery inauguration 10 years ago, so it was fitting to have new works featured on the 10 year anniversary.

The Red Orchestra ("Die Rote Kapelle") series of small pieces is especially noteworthy.

The Red Orchestra, so named by the Gestapo of Nazi Germany was an anti-Nazi resistance movement in Berlin. Many of the Red Orchestra's members were supposedly executed or sent to concentration camps. McGraw's small paintings are a poignant reminder of Nazi Germany adn those who sought to defeat it.

Here's a short list of some of the exhibits Carlsbad's Cannon Art Gallery has had in the last couple of years, with some terrific photos.

Carlsbad Arts | Cannon Art Gallery | Carlsbad California

Carlsbad Arts at the Cannon Art Gallery in Carlsbad

The Cannon Art Gallery in south Carlsbad adjacent to the city's Carlsbad Public Library, is a terrific example of a city-run gallery.

The Cannon Art Gallery feratures exhibits throughout the year, many of which have a national or international reputation, it's free, and the caliber of the artists and works are outstanding.

The most recent show, "Tesoros Mexicanos," is another example of the stellar quality of this city-owned gallery.

"Tesoros Mexicanos" featured over 120 Mexican folk art works from 2 very well known private collections, Lawrence Kent and Tom Pirazzini and Alma Foncerrada Pirazzini

This was an amazing collection of Mexican folk art spanning decades, and the photos, unfortunately, simply do not do it justice. But the vision of what I saw, and enjoyed, remains.

The Cannon Art Gallery is located at 1775 Dove Lane, next to the Carlsbad Public Library by the Vons Shopping Center. It is ALWAYS worth a visit.

Enjoy the show!

Thursdays on the Coast Art Walk | Carlsbad Arts District | Carlsbad CA

Thursdays on the Coast Art Walk in the Carlsbad Art District

An artist on the street during the Carlsbad Art WalkCarlsbad continues to grow in reputation as a town that celebrates the arts. We have a ways to go to before we can truly be considered an arts destination, but there is much to celebrate about the arts in Carlsbad, and the growing Carlsbad Arts District

The Thursdays on the Coast Art Walk in Carlsbad Village is one very good example. We took in the galleries and shops last week, June 24th - the Thursdays on the Coast Art Walk is held year round on the last Thursday of every month from 5 until 9 pm. Retailers, restaurant and galleries are open for all to enjoy, providing a wide range of fun, shopping, and art.

Just a few stellar examples (out of many possibilities) of what we enjoyed the other night in the Carlsbad Arts District

One of many retailers open during the Carlsbad art walk Ivanffy-Uhler Gallery - this is a favorite of mine, with an eclectic and stimulating collection of works in a range of prices and mediums, with charming owners to boot. Definitely worth your while to stop by and enjoy...and buy. Paul Uhler is one of the leaders in the arts community follow him on Facebook

The Foundry @ New Village Arts- a collective of open studios with a fine group of artists to suit a broad range of artistic esthetics. It's fun to be able to meet the artists in their studios. At the New Village Arts venue on State Street

Snyder Art - also on State Street, a bit further out of town but well worth your visit. Bryan Snyder is a talented artist of many mediums. He is a leader in the Carlsbad community in terms of promoting art, and creator of the Carlsbad Crawl, a wonderful blog about Carlsbad art. Check it out and subscribe! Bryan also has created wonderful "I Love Carlsbad" t-shirts for sale - only $10!

And while there were plans for dinner elsewhere, we stopped by to check out the new Carlsbad wine shop, Vintage, and grabbed a few chocolates at the Carlsbad Chocolate Bar for desert.

There are so many other places to visit during the Thursdays on the Coast Art Walk - here's the brochure (feel free to download):

Thursday Art Walk Brochure

Some other artistic venues and events to celebrate Carlsbad arts (my apologies to galleries not yet discovered):

New Village Arts - theatre

TGIF Jazz in the Parks Concert Series

Art Splash - held annually in September

Cannon Art Gallery - a wonderful city art gallery with a masterful director/curator and marvelous exhibits throughout the year

Front Porch Gallery - they are part of the art walk but we did not make it over there. Well worth your visit, with changing exhibits year-round.

Carlsbad Things to Do - Visit the Cannon Art Gallery's Newest Show (Mar-May '08)

Painting by Manny FarberCarlsbad’s Cannon Art Gallery has done it again.

The latest show at this city-sponsored (and free to all) gallery is another winner, as every show seems to be. Carlsbad is known as a town that embraces the arts in many ways, and the William D. Cannon Art Gallery is just one of the town’s offerings.

“Flowers” is an exhibit about just that – flowers in a variety of mediums (oil, acrylic, graphite, encaustic, porcelain, etchings, mixed media installation), colors, sizes and interpretations. From March 30 through May 25 you can experience a breathtaking array of art from 11 artists whose expressions of flowers are as varied as the flowers themselves.

Flowers were a popular theme of the Flemish and Dutch painters, as well as the Impressionists (consider Monet, for example), and these contemporary artists continue this popular tradition.

Curated by Director Karen McGuire, this exhibition is a must see for the art community. Admission is free, as always; hours are Tuesday through Saturday from 11 am until 5 pm; Sundays from 1 to 5 pm.
