It was announced a number of months ago that a new area code was being planned for our area.
The 760 area code covers the largest area in all of California. Not only do we have it here in Carlsbad but folks all the way up in Barstow (one of the hotter places in all of California) do as well...'bout 2 1/2 hours northeast heading toward Las Vegas. The new area code, 442 has been proposed for the SW part of the state, and a significant portion of San Diego County would then need to switch to this new area code.
What makes no sense to me is that the northern portion of the county would become 442, but the southern portion would remain 760, as would the large area north and east of SD County along the Nevada border. How confusing is that?
What IS the logic here?!
It goes without saying that MANY folks are up in arms about this - businesses as well and on the personal level.
Real estate professionals certainly stand to suffer a huge impact (changes to all on-line and print marketing, stationery, signage [typical signs cost about $26 each], business cards), with estimates of over $12 million for that industry alone. But many other businesses, both large and small, stand to suffer a similar financial impact, should this change be enacted. And changes are not only financially related.
An overflowing crowd in Carlsbad (several hundred) attended a hearing on September 4 at the Carlsbad City Offices to plead their case, and yet stand in support of an overlay, which would mean needing to dial a 1 for numbers within the area code and much less inconvenience to numerous people (the 760 area code would remain but all new numbers would become 442 area code).
Check out the Keep760 website - there is lots of information about the issue, the support for the overlay, and updates on the progress and the next steps. You can even send an email from the site showing your support.
