Dia do los Muertos – The Day of the Dead is November 1
The Day of the Dead, Dia de los Muertos, is a famous holiday, especially in Mexico where it is an ancient tradition to celebrate the lives of deceased loved ones – altars, music, favorite foods and beverages of the deceased, visits to the cemetery with flowers, and celebration are the hallmarks of this long standing Mexican tradition.
Dia de los Muertos is traditionally celebrated on November 1 and 2 and beyond, depending on where the festivities take place. November 1 is the Catholic holiday of All Saint’s Day while November 2 is All Soul’s Day.
There is a huge Dia de los Muertos celebration at the Mission San Luis Rey in Oceanside, CA on October 31, from 10 - 4.
This is the largest celebration of its kind in San Diego and the 11th annual event, with 20,000 expected. There will be numerous altars created, a parade, lots of music and food, dancers, arts and crafts for the kids, and a chalk cemetery where everyone (of Mexican heritage, or not) can participate and remember a loved one.
