Earthquakes in Southern California - A Whole Lotta Shakin' Goin' On
There were a bunch of earthquakes in Southern California last night. I know because my laptop was shaking a bit on my desk for about 3 seconds. That was it.
I just felt the one - my wife, sitting 10 feet away in the family room didn't feel a thing - but there were numerous small quakes within a short period of time. My son-in-law felt it up in LA, but my daughter didn't - they called to see if we had noticed, about 9:30 pm.
One of the neat resources we have are the earthquake maps that plot all the earthquakes in California and Nevada that have occurred in the last hour, late day or last week. I think some people are surprised at how many of these things actually occur, with most of them not ever noticed. But if you do feel something you can report it on-line.
Mexicali/Baja, just south of the CA border and east of the ocean, has been the site of multiple earthquakes in the last few months, in particular the "relatively big" one that was felt in much of San Diego, Orange and LA Counties a number of weeks ago. Seems to me it was a 7.2. The larger one last night was in Ocotillo.
If you read Jane Peters' post a few days ago (Arizona, Start Preparing. You Will Have a Coastline Soon) you know that the geologist she talked with during an inspection says we are going to have the BIG one (an 8.0 or so) within the next 30 years.
