Gaffney's Wine Bar Encinitas California is THE wine bar to go to in Encinitas.
Not because they are a new place...oh no, Gaffney's Wine Bar has been around for some time with 9 years at The Lumber Yard in Encinitas over on the coast highway (the 101) in downtown Encinitas (and 7 + years in Sonoma before that)...but in their new digs as of June 29, 2009 at 166B N. El Camino Real (the Encinitas Marketplace), in the heart of the El Camino Real shopping and dining corridor.
Gaffney's Wine Bar joins the very popular Fountain of Youth Juice (look for an article about them shortly) and the about-to-open Total Woman Gym and Day Spa just 2 doors away, and is sure to continue their many years of success and loyal clients (with many more new ones in their new location in probably the busiest shopping area in Encinitas).
I had a wonderful chat with Donna Gaffney, owner (along with husband Robert), and gained some insight in to what makes this place such as success. And it's all about the wine at Gaffney's Wine Bar in Encinitas, and treating customers, whether knowledgeable oenophiles or not, with equal attentiveness and respect. And a genuine pleasure in educating people about the wonderful world of wine.
Wines are served by the glass or bottle, but of course you can pop in and purchase a bottle or 2 or 3 to take home. Gaffney's is most particular of the wines they stock and you won't find the big name and popular wines found in every Bev Mo and grocery store in town - thank goodness.
The focus is on bringing more unusual, hard-to-find yet wonderful wines from smaller wineries. And of course by getting to know these vintners, Donna and Robert Gaffney can help educate folks who want to learn more or who need help selecting the right wine...sometimes a daunting experience if you are clueless. And if you prefer to try some wine before you buy, they offer their half glasses so you can try a few before you select just the right one. And the prices are sure to bring a smile to your face. There is no need for Happy Hour or Half Price Night - prices are terrific all the time.
Don't go to Gaffney's Wine Bar in Encinitas expecting a pretentious gathering place with the trendy trappings of eateries that focus more on how they appear than what they deliver. It is, after all, the wine that takes center stage here. The furnishings are simple, the décor an obvious homage to wine. There is no kitchen, but they offer simple cold appetizers (e.g., cheese plates, pate, bread, olive oil) to complement the wine, NOT detract from it.
Another very cool offering at Gaffney's Wine Bar Encinitas are the very popular catered dinner events (with a chef from Torrey Pines) when you can meet visiting winemakers - they recently hosted John Falcone, winemaker from Rusack Vineyards, a boutique Santa Barbara winery on July 23. Their event on August 6 with Chuck Carlson from Curtis Winery is sold out. Join Gaffney's mailing list to stay informed of upcoming events.
I could go on, but the real pleasure can only come from a visit, a chat with Donna or Robert, and a taste or two of some wonderful wines you may just not find elsewhere. Loyal clients love Gaffney's but there is no doubt that list will grow in their new location.
