A Hike Up Mount Calavera in Carlsbad CA
I don't do a great deal of hiking, but every now and then I get the inspiration. Such was the other day when I decided to hike up Mount Calavera in the Calavera Hills area of east Carlsbad, about 4 miles inland.
Mount Calavera, as I have learned, is not actually a mountain but something called a volcanic plug (you can read about this at the Preserve Calavera website).
Basically that means it's solidified volcanic rock that remains in the area that was formerly the vent of an active volcano millions of years ago that eventually eroded away, leaving the 513-foot Mount Calavera.
There are a number of hiking trails, a wide variety of wildlife and vegetation, great views and it's all in an area of preservation. The photos and video say it better than I can.

Hiking in Elfin Forest in Escondido near San Elijo Hills, San Marcos
