There are lots of ways to enjoy the holidays in Carlsbad and surrounding areas, depending on what you enjoy and what you celebrate.
Folks who enjoy Christmas lights and decorations can simply drive around and appreciate the handiwork of homeowners, some of whom have quite elaborate decorations and lighting on their homes. Malls and individual shops are decorated, including the palm trees.
Individual communities often add their own special tough of the holiday with wreaths, decorated trees, and lights in store windows, on light posts, awnings and just about any surface that will hold them. Leucadia (a commnity in north Encinitas) is even sponsoring a contest, Light up Leucadia, to encourage merchants to celebrate the holidays and decorate the commuity.
There are a number of Hannukhah events and celebrations throughout North County, including a6-foot Menorah public lighting in the La Costa Albertsons Shoppng Center adjacent to the Chabad at La Costa shul in South Carlsbad on December 21 from 4 - 6 pm. There will be a Chanukhah Party at The Forum in Carlsbad on second night, Decemer 22, to memorialize victims of the recent Mumbai terrorist attacks.

For a spectacular light show with animation, The Holiday of Lights at the Del Mar Fairgrounds is not to be missed. This is billed as the largest animated drive-through light show on teh west coast (it looks prety dramatic from the freeway when driving by). The event runs through January 4 - see their website for tickets and more information.
Music lovers will appreciate the popular holiday pops concerts at Symphony Hall in San Diego.
