Join the Batiquitos Lagoon Kayak Cleanup in Carlsbad CA September 25 and 26, 2010

The 5th annual Batiquitos Kayak Cleanup will be this coming weekend. Even if you plan to attend the Carlsbad ArtSplash on one or both of those days you can probably find time to participate in this very worthwhile event (but see note below about registration).
The Batiquitos Lagoon is in south Carlsbad, bordering Encinitas, and is a wildlife nature preserve. There are terrific trails to enjoy along the lagoon and great bird watching, but no fishing (except at the mouth jetty by the ocean), swimming or boating are allowed.
The Batiquitos Lagoon Kayak Cleanup is a way for folks to help maintain this manificent lagoon and rid the area and lagoon of trash, which seems to run the gamut from tires, fishing lines and bottles to plastic bottle holders, golf course markers (from the adjacent Aviara Golfcourse) and a variety of balls.
Folks can bring their own kayaks but there are vendors who donate kayaks and safety gear for the clean-up. While you can sign up on the Batiquitos Foundation website (2-hour slots at $35 per person) up to 6-months in advance, unfortunately it appears to now only be open to a waiting list. Good to do some planning for next year's event.
We are so fortunate to have the Batiquitos Lagoon, and the Batiquitos Foundation whose volunteers work so hard during the year to help keep the trails and area clean and safe. And this special once-a-year event where folks can boat on the lagoon is a special event indeed.
