A visit to Muir Woods in Mills Valley is breathtaking.
If you’ve been you certainly know what I mean, and if not, you really should if you are ever in the area.
Muir Woods National Monument is a 295 acre preserved forest populated by giant California Redwoods, the tallest and one of the largest living things on earth. The land was donated to the government by the Kent family and dedicated as a national monument by Roosevelt, and named for conservationist John Muir.
If you ever saw the Star Wars film “Return of the Jedi” you will recognizes Muir Woods as the location for the filming of the forest moon of Endor scenes. Remember the Ewoks?
There are multiple trails of varying length and difficulty offering spectacular views of this amazing collection of trees. The main trails on the floor of the forest are paved and handicapped accessible, and the upper trails offer a very different look at the trees. And the drive to Muir Woods is pretty incredible itself, with wonderful views of the mountains, canyons and ocean.
It’s easy to spend a couple of hours enjoying this amazing preserve – be sure to take your camer!
