The new Carlsbad High School has gotten the go-ahead and groundbreaking will occur in the Fall of this year (grading and utility work). The new school has been debated and in the planning stages for quite some time, and as with any project of this magnitude, has been somewhat controversial.

In part, the controversy is due to the location - at the junction of Cannon and College just south of Calavera Hills. The area now is open space which has been agricultural in nature. However, the Final Environmental Impact Report was certified in February 2009 by the Board of Trustees.
The new high school in the Carlsbad Unified School District is slated to open for fall classes in 2012 with a capacity of about 1500 students.
