Summer in Southern California means a lot of things.
It certainly has hit other parts of the country with vengeance - record heat, humidity, rain, thunderstorms and tornadoes.
Here along the Carlsbad coast we have yet to see much of a chance in temperature, and June gloom is still prevalent. That will change. The desert is already heating up to the 3 digits.
Summer means lots of things, though...my summer photo, for one - recycled every summer for the past 3 years. Taken right after coming off the beach, it comes out at the beginning of summer and goes under cover around Labor Day.
Summer in Carlsbad and surrounding communities brings all sorts of activities and events for residents and visitors alike:
Surf's up - well, you can surf all year, but the water is warmer, wet suits are less common, and you will find more surfing competitions. More info on Surfing San Diego.
Outdoor movies - many towns offer them, or you will have specific communities hosting them (San Elijo Hills in San Marcos, and Rancho Carrillo in Carlsbad, to name only a few).
Racing Season at the Del Mar Fair Grounds in Del Mar, CA beginning July 21
Outdoor arts and crafts festivals - alright, they are all outdoors year-round here, but there are more of them to enjoy.
Farmers' Markets - yep, year round too, but the produce is better and more abundant at the summer markets, with longer hours and more variety and vendors.
Carlsbad TGIF Jazz in the Parks series- June through August
Summer Pipe Organ Festivalby the Spreckles Organ Society using the world's largest outdoor pipe organ in Balboa Park (June 21 to August 30)
The famous 29th annual Carlsbad Triathlon with Health and Fitness Expo - the expo is Saturday July 10, the triathlon is Sunday the 11th
Summers Camps - for kids of all ages, and even adults. Art, music, sports, educational, you name it we've got it.
Fireworks - July 4 is fast approaching, the big holiday weekend of the summer. You'll find all sorts of events and activities associated with the 4thand fireworks displays all over. Big events worthy of note take place at Seaworld in San Diego, and Legoland in Carlsbad
Summer concerts - the list is too extensive but you'll find concerts all over the county all summer long in a myriad of venues (parks, clubs, Coors Amphitheater, the San Diego County Fair, the local casinos, Humphreys by the Bay), some free.
Time with friends and family at the beach (sand castles, swimming, surfing, kite flying, sleeping, volley ball), the parks or at home in your backyard where built-in barbecues, spas, and full outdoor kitchens are popular.
Some out-of-area Events and Venues:
The Hollywood Bowl in Los Angeles - a full series of concerts during the week and on weekends. I've been a bunch of times - it's a terrific venue with a wide range of seating options and prices.
The Festival of the Arts and Pageant of the Masters- Laguna Beach. Amazing art and "live" paintings by the Masters, July 7 through August 31.
