See the Things That Fly by Visiting the Torrey Pines GliderPort in La Jolla CA
The Southern California coastline is spectacular, and a wonderful place to truly see it is at the Torrey Pines Glider Port.
I'm not suggesting you HAVE to go hang-gliding, but do so by all means if you wish. However, the views up and down the coast are truly awesome, and getting to watch the things that fly in the area is a treat, especially if you prefer your feet on terra firma (and flying things are NOT just hang gliders).
The vistas south along the La Jolla coastline to the village are gorgeous. You can peer over the cliffs down to Black's Beach, or look northward all the way to Oceanside (and beyond on a clear day...over 40 miles). And watching hang gliders cruise by effortlessly in the breezes hundreds of feet above the beach along the cliffs is breathtaking.
While you're there, check out the Cliffhanger Café (link is Yelp reviews NOT their site - see note below). The sandwiches are downright good, and you can enjoy them al fresco at picnic tables while watching the crowds, and the hang gliders, along with all the other activity happening around you. The only other restaurants I have seen that offer equally dramatic views are at Nepenthe and Ventana in Big Sur.
Photos and videos, of course, say far more about beautiful scenery and flying in the sky than I ever could. Enough babble and on to the good stuff.
