June Gloom - It Ain't ALWAYS Sunny in Southern California

The San Diego area of Southern California, including Carlsbad, is known for having fabulous weather. We call it living in paradise. And we do have sun much of the time.
If you have ever seen Steve Martin in LA Story, you'll likely recall his role as the wacky weather dude Harris Telemacher where the weather report, day after day, was SUNNY.
On a side note there were lots of other humorous pokes at life in LA (and California in general) in LA Story - watch the trailer.
Folks who live here in San Diego are in the know, but those who come to visit, or move here, aren't always aware of the phenomenon we call June Gloom (and May Gray), otherwise known as the marine layer.
I'm no expert, and I was just as surprised myself several times when I visited before moving here, thinking of gorgeous sun and being met with days of gray. What gives?
There are times of the year, especially in May and June when we experience far more marine layer days, especially early in the day but sometimes for an entire day. This is more common near the coast - indeed, you can be further inland, say 5 - 10 miles, and it will be sunny, but the coast will have a heavy marine layer which often burns off quickly by noon or so.
Sometimes the marine layer is very heavy and on the ground, which of course looks like the fog you see elsewhere. But that's actually less common than the gray days of May and June - we had one this morning but it's beautiful now, at 11 AM.
I'm certainly no weather expert, so rather than try to explain the May Gray June Gloom phenomenon, you can read more about the marine layer here.
If you are considering moving here, the marine layer is something to consider, since the inland and coastal climates can be very different, and folks often have a definite preference for one or the other.
Keep in mind, though, that once you get past May Gray June Gloom when the marine layer is more prevalent we DO have day after day of gorgeous sun and beach weather, especially in the summer. But you will still often get the marine layer moving in late in the day or in the evening.
The other interesting thing you will notice is that we usually get 4 weather reports in our area - coastal, inland, mountains and desert. Temperatures can vary dramatically at different times of the year, both highs and lows, sometimes within just a few miles and at higher elevations. There truly are micro-climates in the area because of the ocean breezes, hills and canyons.
For the record, Carlsbad is in an area where May Gray June Gloom is common, but even within Carlsbad you can find areas where it will be beautiful and sunny, while at the same time there is a heavy coastal fog or gray skies.
May Gray and June Gloom - it isn't always sunny in Southern California, but it's pretty darn nice most of the time.
