Make Mistakes, and Make Mistakes Often
This quote, from Doug Devitre, says a mouthful.
Don’t be misled by what may be your first, and incorrect, impression of this statement.
Doug Devitre is a well known national speaker and instructor on Social Media, Blogging, technology, and other real-estate related topics. He spoke today at our North San Diego County Association of REALTORS membership meeting on social media, covering a range of tools and tips. If you haven’t heard Doug talk, you should.
Doug’s advice early on in the talk for folks getting started, or already involved, in social media was “MAKE MISTAKES, AND MAKE MISTAKES OFTEN.”
Folks often are paralyzed about trying something new…in part due to lack of knowledge or understanding, but also often by fear of making mistakes. Some of us are more perfectionistic than others, and worry, perhaps needlessly, about things not being right.
Not doing something for fear of making mistakes, in our business, or any endeavor for that matter, is a huge, well, mistake. Easier to say than do, of course.
So too is not learning from your mistakes.
Indeed, there is likely far more value gained by making mistakes, learning from them, and NOT making them again, then not having made those errors to begin with. You must learn what works and what does not. It’s OK to have someone say you made a mistake and how to correct it. And rest assured in the social media world someone likely will.
Being creative, and doing what sets you apart from others, can make a difference in your business and your social media presence. Mistakes are part of being creative and an individual, versus following just what everyone else is doing.
Social media continues to evolve as more people embrace and find ways to use it. While there are a good number of general do’s and don’ts, it’s hard to say there are hard and fast rules. Thus opportunities for making mistakes, and thereby learning, are around every corner.
Devitre’s quote was compelling, and sage advice for those us already embracing social media, and for those who are not yet there or just emerging.
Of course this does not mean being stupid about what you do and say, or intentionally making errors. It’s more about recognizing that mistakes can and will happen, and to use that experience to learn.
There were a wealth of tips, strategies and tools in Devitre’s talk…but that’s fodder for another article.
But I’ll leave you with one other mantra before signing off…”Share, don’t Sell.”
