The Agua Hedionda Lagoon in Carlsbad
The Agua Hedionda Lagoon is another of Carlsbad aquatic treasures. It’s one of 3 lagoons in Carlsbad, in addition to the Batiquitos Lagoon in south Carlsbad, bordering the Aviara area, and the Buena Vista Lagoon, to the north of Carlsbad Village and bordering Oceanside.

The Agua Hedionda Lagoon extends inland not far from Cannon Road to the ocean. A number of residential communities bordering the lagoon in this 92008 zip code have wonderful views extending to the ocean
The Agua Hedionda Lagoon is the only one of Carlsbad’s Lagoons where water sports are permitted; to the far west along the freeway on the north side of the lagoon is an area for paddle boarding, jet skis, canoes and other water sports at California Watersports.
Bristol Cove is a residential area on a small cove on the Agua Hedionda Lagoon where you can actually have a boat moored right outside your home, offering the least expensive waterfront property in Carlsbad. Bayshore Drive in Bristol Cove offers public access to the lagoon.
To the far west just before the lagoon flows in and out of the ocean along the Coast Road, just south of Tamarack Beach, you’ll find public fishing, and the Carlsbad Aquafarm with farm-raised Blue Mussels, Pacific Oysters and Ogo (edible seaweed)…a favorite place to spot lots of Brown Pelicans who obviously know where there might be some good eatin’! And according to Wikipedia there is also a White Sea Bass hatchery operated by the Hubbs-Seaworld Institute.
There are miles of trails to enjoy around the lagoon, with views of the hills, the lagoon, and a residential area, as well as the Encina Power Station and a number of high-tension wire towers and power lines, certainly not the most picturesque aspects of the area.
The Agua Hedionda Lagoon Discovery Center, owned and operated by the Agua Hedionda Lagoon Foundation, is well worth a visit, at the far east end of the lagoon along Cannon Road; the entrance to the Center and parking area, plus access to trails, is off Cannon. There are wonderful exhibits and lots of information about the lagoon, the history and culture of the area, preservation activities, and so much more. In the parking area you’ll even find a coffee shop/café – Café Vacanza!!
The Agua Hedionda Lagoon is well worth a visit, whether enjoyed at the ocean end, while having fun with the water-sport of your choice, exploring the Discovery Center, or walking some of the trails. Please be mindful of this aquatic treasure and avoid littering or polluting the trails and the lagoon itself!
