Entrance to Ristorante La Terrazza in Coronado CA

After our visit to the Hotel Del Coronado on Coronado Island, we took a short walk through the downtown area to explore a bit. The food bell was ringing so we dropped in at Ristorante La Terrazza, just a block from The Del, for lunch.

Ristorante La Terrazza offers rooftop dining indoors or out with view of the downtown area. With the bright sunshine, blue skies, and temps about 58, it was a great time to sit outside above the street and watch the world go by while enjoying a terrific lunch.

Crab Cakes Louisiana at Entrance to Ristorante La Terrazza in Coronado CA

The Ristorante La Terrazza menu is extensive, as one usually seems to find in Italian restaurants, with a good wine list. We both decided on the Crab Cakes Louisiana that comes with a small side salad. A basket of warm foccaccia with olive oil, and a good glass of chardonnay made for an excellent meal.

The restaurant was quiet, and the service was attentive and efficient. Dining al fresco with terrific weather, great views, and good food was a wonderful way to spend a relaxing hour on New Year's Day. Ristorante La Terrazza was a most pleasant find, and I would go back in a heartbeat. It's well worth a visit if you are in the area.

New Year's Day 2011 | A Visit to the Hotel Del Coronado in Coronado, San Diego, CA

New Year's Day 2011 and A Visit to the Hotel Del Coronado in Coronado, San Diego, CA

A very special evening with close friends, plenty of wine and champagne, and fabulous food with everyone chipping in made for a wonderful way to ring in the New Year last night.

And with living on the Left Coast we get to enjoy Times Square at 9, Chicago at 10 and then LA at midnight (I think we watched something at 11 but we were having too much fun laughing and I don't remember).  Here was our contribution (OK, it was my wife's - I didn't do a thing this time).

New Year's Eve appetizers 2011

Today,New Year's Day 2011, was a day of downtime after a very later night, and a visit with my wife, Kay, to the Hotel Del Coronado on Coronado Island. Coronado Island isn't really an island but there is a really neat bridge to get you from San Diego over the bay to Coronado.

Ice Skating at the Hotel Del Coronado on Coronoado Island, San Diego CAThe Hotel Del Coronado, or the Hotel Del, or just The Del, as it is affectionately called, was established in 1888 with a reputation as one of the grand hotels on the west coast.

The Hotel Del Coronado's architecture reminds me of some of the big hotels at the beach in New England. And with celebrities like Marilyn and Charles (that's Monroe and Lindbergh) and other Hollywood glitterati, numerous Presidential visits, and a ghost, the Del has an international reputation and fascinating history and is well worth exploring, even if you don't want to spend the money to stay there.

There are scores of fancy shops, the world class Yamaguchi Spa, terrific dining (you could, today, have a New Year's Brunch for $77 - we decided no), and wonderful views of the ocean.

A special treat was watching the ice skaters...yes, that's right, we DO have outdoor ice skating in Southern California, complete with palms trees, views of the ocean and an almost balmy 58 degrees today.

It was a terrific feeling to just walk around and enjoy the beauty and holiday decorations by the sea, relaxing after the craziness of the holidays these last few weeks, and to visit this National Historical Landmark - despite being here 5+ years, we have never actually visited and today seemed appropriate.

Hope you enjoyed YOUR New Year's Day

Ice Skating in Southern California? You Bet You Can, in Coronado (San Diego)

Snow Falling in Havvard Square, Cambridge, MA in December 2004, our LAST winter in New EnglandIce skating is likely NOT the first thing that comes to mind when you hear "Southern California," even in the winter. I think of Maine, Minnesota, Michigan, Massachusetts, and other non-M states that get REALLY cold. REALLY!

The Hotel Del Coronado, perhaps one of the most famous hotels in San Diego, offers folks the chance to ice skate outdoors overlooking the blue Pacific Ocean. Now what could be better than that? Palm tree...sand...ocean...ice skating at holiday time.

Ice Skating at The Del, as it's affectionately known, continues until January 3, 2010 on their 10,000 lawn. Well, not the lawn itself, of course. You know...

Skating sessions are daily from 2 - 5 pm and then from 6 - 9 pm.  There are weekend and holiday matinees from 11 - 1.

From December 19th on you can also skate between 11 and 1 daily in addition to the other sessions.

When you consider the fabulous location and views, the cost of $20 for adults and $15 for kids (10 and under) is reasonable (know that you pay for the session, not how much time you spend skating...and allowing for falls - LOL). You can rent skates, too, for $5.

Music will get you in the spirit, as will the hot chocolate and, my favorite, "libations!"

The neat thing, other than the terrific views and considering it is NOT 20 degrees, is that a portion of the Hotel Del Coronado skating proceeds will benefit the Make-a-Wish Foundation.
