A Visit to the Oasis Camel Dairy (Almost)
We left the coast today to try and find some sun, which has been sadly missing, except for a peek now and then, for a number of days. Heading east was the way to go since the marine layer would be gone.
A favorite place to visit, about 50 miles away, is Julian, known now for its apples but with a history of being a gold rush town.
It's easy to get to, you simply take the 78 freeway which becomes a smaller road in Escondido, then follow that through the mountains to Ramona, then to Santa Ysabel, and finally Julian.
There are some interesting sights along the way, one of which is the Oasis Camel Dairy. We passed it on the way to Julian for lunch, but decided to stop on the way back.
The Oasis Camel Dairy offer camel's milk soap, and they offer tours and rides. No camel's milk for humans, yet, but that's on the way I understand.
Unfortunately they were closed today so I can only offer some photos from the road and driveway, and a link to the Oasis Camel Dairy website.
The Oasis Camel Dairy is the first camel dairy in America, and has been around for some 20 years. Not quite the sort of thing you'd expect to find on a rural road through the California countryside amidst massive fields, cows, goats and scrub pine.
If you are heading that direction, east from Escondido/Oceanside, the Oasis Camel Dairy is just a few miles before Santa Ysabel on the right, but about 1 mile east of the Pine Hills Chicken Ranch (stop by for fresh eggs). You can't miss the camels in the field or the Oasis Camel Dairy sign.
Next trip out we are making sure we can visit and ride a camel.
