Carlsbad Real Estate News and Views: Animal Rescue in Carlsbad and Surrounding Areas - Fallout from Short Sales and Foreclosures

Here's the REAL scoop on living in Carlsbad ~ beaches, things to do, places to eat, community events, and of course neighborhoods, homes and the Carlsbad real estate market in general, including surrounding communities.

Animal Rescue in Carlsbad and Surrounding Areas - Fallout from Short Sales and Foreclosures

There is much fallout from the short sale and foreclosure crisis that has hit the housing market these last few years. No area seems untouched, in some way, by the substantial increase in loan defaults, and numerous families are in the process of losing, or have already lost, their homes. A certainly the expectation is there will be many more

Our new kitten, Lily - a Maine Coon CatThe other fall out from this crisis is a huge increase in the number of abandoned animals, primarily dogs and cats.

We saw many pets left behind in the drastic fires here in San Diego in October 2007, and further north in 2008, but the short sale and foreclosure crisis has lingered on, resulting in thousands of pets who have been left behind by their owners. While most seem to be cats and dogs from reports I have heard, I suspect there are others who have also been left behind to fend for themselves.

Fortunately there are a number of organizations that are dedicated to the rescuing these animals. Here are just a few:

Critter Crossings Corporation is the result of someone who cares deeply about the plight of so many abandoned dogs in the Los Molinos area (just north of Chico near Sacramento). The problems are not simply finding homes but dealing with necessary surgeries and medical care, all of which cost significantly. Here's the link to their Facebook page for more information on this very worthy organization. You can make a donation here. Stop by their site for more information on the dogs that are available for adoption now.

In San Diego County (Encinitas) there is the Rescue House, that focuses on rescuing and finding homes for area cats that have been abandoned, given up for adoption or abused. We adopted an abandoned kitten (8 months old, now named Lily) from them a few months ago, and the whole process was most impressive - interviews, etc. They have a substantial rescue, foster care and adoption program in the North County San Diego area.

Other Animal Rescue and Adoption options in the Carlsbad/San Diego area:

North County Human Society (includes a shelter in Carlsbad)

San Diego Humane Society

Jolene's Horse Rescue
Falcon Ridge Equine Rescue in Valley Center

AdoptaPet - national organization

Friends of County Animal Shelters (FOCAS) San Diego

There are numerous organizations that rescue pets throughout the North County San Diego area. If you are interested in a specific breed, there is likely an organization dedicated to their rescue and adoption.

Hi Jeff - Thanks so much for bringing this to our attention.  Is that by any chance your newly rescued friend helping your wife at her computer?  Thanks for being the tender-hearted person you are and taking in this cat who needed a new family to love it!

Jeff I had not really thought about the affect that all these foreclosures would have on pets, but that does raise another serious concern.

Hi Jeff, While I am in total support and applaud the efforts for those that are providing the care , what really gets me is the number of people abandoning of these helpless animals. It is so outrageous and I see red , just thinking about it. There can be no excuse for this and it tells you that we have some heartless and cruel people in our midst-too many. The little ones didn't create or have anything to do with the problems they face in losing their home and I feel bad for them in that regard but I feel a whole lot less sympathy for them when they do this unconscionable behavior.

We started having a problem here about 18 mos ago. People were leaving the pets in the homes to die when they vacated due to a foreclosure. Now people are surrendering pets to the shelters because they've lost their job and can no longer afford the pet. As a result, lots of purebreds are available. It's just so sad.
