How to Put Out a Fire with a Fire Extinguisher

The Encinitas Fire Department put on a demonstration yesterday on how to put out a fire using a fire extinguisher. [photo courtesy of photo8.com on Flickr]
This demonstration was part of the class on Emergency Preparedness being offered by the Natural Living Source. The demo was held in the parking lot outside the Blue Star Body Lounge who hosted the site for the remainder of the Emergency Preparedness class.
Critical to putting out a fire with a fire extinguisher, of course, is knowing HOW to use it, and the videos will explain the procedure and show you how it's done.
The important way to remember the procedure is PASS:
P - Pull the ring to release the handle on the extinguisher
A - Aim the hose
S - Squeeze the handle to release the chemicals
S - Sweep back and forth with the hose, spraying LOW at the base of the flames NOT at the middle or top
I hope you will share this important message with others who might benefit. And for those who don't even have a fire extinguisher in their homes, well, perhaps this will inspire them. Per the Encinitas Fire Department a home fire extinguisher can be used to put out many small fires and possible prevent a worse fire or tragedy.

Jeff, a Fire Extinguisher is a must to have around the house, and it is always good to know the most effective way to use it.
Jeff, Thanks for this information. I am going to re-blog it. As the first gentleman said in the first video, you may have one of these in your home but may not know how to use it properly.
Gloria
Jeff, thanks for this great post. We always make sure we have fire extinguishers handy, but never really thought about the proper way to use them.
Jeff ..What wonderful information... have one but I really never knew how to use it ..thank you

Jeff -
A great, informative and potentially vital bit of information. I've re-blogged. Thanks.
I had no idea, I keep one under my cook-top, but never used it. The rare times we have grilled on the jenn-aire, and a fire has blazed to high I throw a dish towel over it. Yikes not good.
I am going to reblog this in a few days, for the Ann Arbor area folks.
George - well like so many other things, if you don't know how to use it it won't be of much use. I suspect more folks DON'T know how than do.
Gloria - thanks for the reblog. It's worth sharing, IMO.
Gary - that;'s true of most folks. It can't help much if you don't know how it works.
Hannah - and now you do. HOpefully you will NEVER need it.
Thanks, Jim. I'm glad you felt it worthwhile to share. I did.
Missy - hmmm, that could make things worse I suppose. But I imagine many would respond the same way. I know someone who threw water on a grease fire and it just spread.
Jeff
Jeff, I just found an old fire extinguisher while cleaning out my basement. So I guess maybe the first step is to be sure that the thing is properly charged!
Hi Jeff ~ Super topic! I too have a fire extinguisher but have never used one. Glad I found your post.
