I am getting ready for a mini-vacation (an anniversary trip) by car heading up the California coast through Big Sur, Monterey, on to Calistoga and Napa, and back through San Francisco/Oakland and LA to Carlsbad. We've taken parts of the trip before along the stunning California coastline south of Big Sur, and I have been "reliving" our journey along this route back in 2007 before we take off in a few days.
These are just a few of my favorite photos that capture some of the variety of the beautiful California coastline (just a few hours worth, mind you, from San Luis Obispo to Monterey). There's lots going on real estate-wise so I won't be Internet free, and I might even share some photos along the way. Hopefully our coastal weather will improve - the marine layer has been particularly stubborn right along the coast. It doesn't feel like summer at all.
The edge of the continent is an amazing drive if you've never done it, if only for a few hours. Enjoy!

Thanks,Lynda. We are very excited. Lots of driving, family, good wine, and some time away. Alas, I have some work I expect will follow along but with my trusty Blackberry, laptop, and coverage back in Carlsbad all will be fine.
We really are VERY fortunate. The experience of driving along this coastline is not to be missed.

Jeff: Have a great trip. I just did that journey on Memorial Day weekend. I can not get enough of that journey either heading south or north. Great photo's.
I've done it and it is one of the most memorable drives I have. Our drive was from LA to San Francisco along the coast highway.

Sounds like you're in for a great trip...good for you--enjoy! i once bicycled from Palo Alto over to Hwy. 1 and then all the way down to San Luis Obispo. It was an awesome ride, especially from Santa Cruz to Big Sir.
Jeff I have done that drive and it is beautiful and I would love to do it again someday.
We've taken this trip before, and I just recently mentioned taking it again. BEAUTIFUL pic's.
Hannah - haha, those are seals sleeping on the beach in a nature preserve.

Gene - ha ha. Yeah, I get that. Seems I was in a rut for along time but recently have been traveling quite a bit for work. I continue to enjoy learning more about CA - there is so much here and the state is HUGE. I expect there are parts I will never see.
John T - how fortunate. I thought about what fun a bike ride would be when I drove this before. I haven't done much biking in quite a while.
George - so you KNOW how beautiful it is. Hopefully the area will have recovered from the devastating fires there a year or two ago.
