Day 1 was beautiful, once we got 45 minutes north of Carlsbad and the sun came out. Good thing. I had visions of a trip along the coastline with more marine layer.
We paid a quick visit to Surf, CA (top photo) - yep that is the name - nothing but a beach and, oddly, an Amtrack stop by Vandenburg AFB.
Driving through Lompoc the evidence of the horrific fires from last year were much in evidence.
We stayed in Pismo Beach, which is a small, charming seacoast town about 3.5 hours north of LA. Fabulous views from our room, as you can see. Lots of seagulls, including the one who hung out below our balcony clearly waiting for handouts.
Today we head up Route 1 to Big Sur, which has incredible views. Should be fun.

Thanks for taking us along with you - even if it's the back seat view. Hope you have a great time looking forward to more.
Hi Jeff, Somehow I thought you must be on your way back , now to realize you just left. The sights and views will be amazing and hope you just have the most wonderful time. Can't wait to see al the great photos will you bring back. Perhaps I will see next week at RainCamp. Have a wonderful trip.
Jeff - I don't know if your trip is structured where you can' fit another fine place in but besides Big Sur there is Montanya De Oro outside of Los Osos that is another gorgeous part of our coastline. Thanks for sharing.
Jeff, I love driving up the coast of CA. It is so beautiful. Your pics bring back fond memories.
If you happen to stop on your return through Pismo Beach, check this out the sand dunes. It is 13 miles out of the way but so worth seeing. You do have to drive through the farming district but even that is very cool.
What beautiful photos - sure different from our flat coastline in Florida!
Spectacular Pics! I love the blue water :)
Jeff those are beautiful pictures that you took. Enjoy the vacation and keep the pictures coming.
Great photos...I miss the west coast...I went to undergraduate school at UCSB. I haven't been there in many years. Have a great trip.
Your pictures can almost make me smell the ocean. Have a wonderful time. And send more photos.
