See the Things That Fly by Visiting the Torrey Pines GliderPort in La Jolla CA

The Southern California coastline is spectacular, and a wonderful place to truly see it is at the Torrey Pines Glider Port.
I'm not suggesting you HAVE to go hang-gliding, but do so by all means if you wish. However, the views up and down the coast are truly awesome, and getting to watch the things that fly in the area is a treat, especially if you prefer your feet on terra firma (and flying things are NOT just hang gliders).
The vistas south along the La Jolla coastline to the village are gorgeous. You can peer over the cliffs down to Black's Beach, or look northward all the way to Oceanside (and beyond on a clear day...over 40 miles). And watching hang gliders cruise by effortlessly in the breezes hundreds of feet above the beach along the cliffs is breathtaking.
While you're there, check out the Cliffhanger Café (link is Yelp reviews NOT their site - see note below). The sandwiches are downright good, and you can enjoy them al fresco at picnic tables while watching the crowds, and the hang gliders, along with all the other activity happening around you. The only other restaurants I have seen that offer equally dramatic views are at Nepenthe and Ventana in Big Sur.
Photos and videos, of course, say far more about beautiful scenery and flying in the sky than I ever could. Enough babble and on to the good stuff.
[NOTE: I apologize for not sharing the website for the Torrey Pines Gliderport. But I was getting a message that the site was unsafe - sure didn't want to pass that along]

Jeff - I remember, many years ago, when I was playing on Torrey Pines seeing this happening but it seems as though it is much much busier now. Seems like the hobby kicked in. I have never done this but I have always wanted to. Thanks for sharing.
Hi Jeff, The site has slowed down so much I couldn't even get up your comment section up to leave a comment. The photos and tours are wonderful. That Bird of Prey is amazing. What is it? Just beautiful !
Hi Jeff,
Wow, beautiful photos! I had no idea there was a glider port in Torrey Pines.
So where did the big black bird come from? Not sure if I've ever seen anything like that.
Jeff,
I've seen the activity their a few times while in town on business. The scenery there is amazing!
Your post made me remember our road trip last November! What a beautiful area you liv ein Jeff.
Jeff that looks like a hell of a good time! I can not even imagine the views from up there.
Hey Jeff those are some magnificent photos you have! I love all the pictures and especially of those floating in the air :)
Nice post.
Bruce - well I have thought about it but not sure I am ready to pretend I'm a bird.
George - yeah, I know about your fear of heights
Hannah - it is spectacular. And so are the homes fortunate enough to have the views.
Ken - well there is always a crowd there when I have visited. They seem to limit the number of folks in the air at one time - never have seen more than 5.
William- it HAS gotten slower it seems. The bird was either a crow of a raven. I was surprised at how close I was able to get. He seemed pretty used to people. and hanging out around the Cafe can't be a bad idea.
Lynda - it is well worth a visit for the views.
Liz and Bill- the coastal views are pretty remarkable when it's clear - the views of the bluffs and the ocean are wonderful no matter what.
Monika- it is pretty memorable. You must have enjoyed your trip when you were out here for NAR last year.
Bill - it is pretty impressive. I'm guessing 500 feet or so.
Dena- it was just one of those brainstorms - I guess because of the birds, the coast guard, the kite, the hangliders, and the small planes.
Laura - thanks. They do not quite do justice to the real views but you get the idea.
John - thanks
