A Visit to Chinatown in San Francisco, CA

A Visit to San Francisco's Chinatown

Heading uphill in the Pacific Heights area of San Francisco, CASan Francisco's Chinatown is an amazing place to visit, and of the Chinatowns I've seen (New York, Boston, LA), the best in our country.

It is also reportedly the largest outside of Asia.

We spend several hours strolling around San Francisco's Chinatown on Sunday, which included a mile or so of walking up and down some of San Francisco's famed hills (more up than down, it seemed, in the Pacific Heights area - photo at right) with fabulous views of Alcatraz, East Bay, Coit Tower and the Transamerica Building.

Anyone who has visited San Francisco's Chinatown is familiar with the crowds of shoppers, numerous retail shops selling everything imaginable, plenty of fresh food and produce options as well as all sorts of things I always have a hard time identifying - mushrooms, sea cucumbers to name a few.

There are a zillion choices of places for Dim Sum (always fun especially if you don't go with any pre-conceived notions of what to expect), great bakeries and all sorts of business services.

San Francisco's Chinatown is a shopping experiences not to be missed, even if you are just window shopping. But you'd be hard pressed not to find something to take home.

Learn more about San Francisco's Chinatown than I could ever tell you. And enjoy the tour below.

We used to go occasionally when I was a teenager - fun to shop.  I always bought a tea set for about $2 and those cute little black fabric maryjane shoes.

Jeff,

I really like visiting Chinatown in San Francisco. The one in Vancouver BC is good too.

Jeff - Chinatown in San Francisco definitely looks like one of the best in the country.  The only Chinatown I've ever been to was in Chicago.

San Francisco is so unique.  I remember my upper thighs from all that downhill walking.  Love the picture.

One of my favorite short stays of my life was 6 weeks on the edge of Chinatown in the late 60's. And I've never made it back, yet it's not all that far away. Time to reconsider.

Jeff it has been a long time since I have been to San Francisco, but I remember those hilly streets well.  Chinatown in San Francisco is an experience that everyone should experience at least once in their life time.

Kathleen - I would have koved to do that but there simply was not time. We were here for a little over 48 hours visiting family. Next time, perhaps. But it was a great visit.

Joan - it was great, and nice to not be working ALL the time. LOL

Thanks, Norma. SFO is one of my fave towns. I ALWAYS have a great time no matter what I do, adn there is so much to explore.

Pat - there's not much you can't buy in Chinatown.

Robert - and I have one more restaurant to write about - terrific newish place in Jack London wharf area of Oakland.

Jeff
