Landmarks in North San Diego County – Carlsbad, Encinitas and Cardiff
Lots of cities and towns around the country become known for their landmarks, whether they are geographic features or human-made objects (buildings, statues, bridges).
Famous landmarks that come to mind include the Empire State Building, Flatiron Building and Statue of Liberty in NYC; the Liberty Bell and statue of William Penn in Philadelphia; the well-known monuments in Washington DC.; the St. Louis arch; the Sears and Hancock Towers in Chicago; the Golden Gate Bridge and Alcatraz (you know where, right?); Mount Rushmore in South Dakota…the list goes on.
Some are landmarks historically, while others simply seem to become popular for a host of reasons – uniqueness, human interest, etc.
Here are my favorites in my area, with apologies to many others I have yet to see or simply did not include:
The WINDMILL, Carlsbad
ALT KARLSBAD, Carlsbad Village
The CARLSBAD VISITORS CENTER, formerly the Train Depot, Carlsbad Village
The BOATHOUSES in Encinitas
The SELF REALIZATION FELLOWSHIP in Encinitas

The CARDIFF KOOK Statue in Cardiff by the Sea – read more about the many costumes that have adorned this controversial surfing statue – The Royal Kook Celebrates the Royal Wedding in Cardiff, CA
The MERCANTILE BUILDING in downtown Cardiff by the Sea

Hi Jeff, This is excellent and the photos are as well. We sure are lucky in this county to have so many interesting landmarks and areas of interest. Nicely done Jeff.
Jeff those landmarks might not be as well know as the ones that you first mentioned, but I am sure that they are every bit as special to you.
Nice photos, Jeff! I really like the little visitors' center. Have a great weekend!
Hi, Jeff...great post idea to point out local landmarks! I love the Cardiff Kook!
Nice looking Localism post and I really like the unique pictures of the statues all dressed up!!
What a wonderful idea to point out the landmarks in your area. Good topic for all of us to follow.
Margaret
Good morning Jeff,
This is terrific. It makes me want to dig out my landmarks and post them......hmmmmm I think I may!
Been to all of these wonderful ladnmarks. SOCAL has so many fab' places to visit, doesn't it Jeff? Great post.
I was expecting to see the flower fields Jeff! All the pictures are also good ones of points of interest in our towns. Nice Post.
William - thanks for the compliment.. There is so much to see in our area, and I am still discovering even after 6+ years here. And I didn't even get into things further south in La Jolla, Point Loma, Pacific Beach, etc. some of which you have shared.
George - indeed.
Pat - thanks. The Visitors' Center is very cool inside - you can tell it was a train depot and there are some really interesting historic photos.
Nina - The Cardiff Kook is great fun, and there has been lots of controversy, and it is always in the news for the latest costume. It even has its own website!
Russell - I would estimate the statue has been dressed up 50+ times since it was installed a few years ago.
Margaret - every community, I suspect, has buildings or other things that could be considered landmarks, famous or not. I find it interesting to hear about these sorts of things, and to see them for myself.
Cindy - DO IT. I had great fun. And I already had all the photos. We would love to see.
Kat - indeed it does. And I amm still finding other interesting things in the area.
Jeff
Steve and Carol - yes, I was going to include that but I decided to not have the post get too long. But the Flower Fields are known far and wide and it's fun to see them transform during the year from dirt to acres of gorgeous flowers in March, April and May.
And so, with your encouragement...
Jeff
HI Jeff - what a great post and great photos. I love this last one too the flower fields! I have seen some of them before, but not all. I think the boat houses are awesome! Have a great Sunday!
Jeff great photo's of the Landmarks, my favorite was the Windmill... reminded me of my travels to Holland...BTW I expected a picture of you with one of your listings as a Landmark too:))
Jeff: My when my boys were little and I would take them to Moonlight beach we would always drive past the Self Realization Center and they thought it was some kind of Disneyland! We stopped one day and they were surprised there was no Mickey Mouse and no rides....beautiful gardens though!
