Things to Do in Carlsbad - Carlsbad Marathon is this Sunday January 22, 2012
in Carlsbad CA
The Tri-City Medical Carlsbad Marathon will take place this weekend, on Sunday January 22, 2012 in Carlsbad.
The Carlsbad Marathons are always popular, with world class runners and plenty of viewers along the course, a significant portion of which is along the beautiful Carlsbad coastline on the historic Route 101/Coast Road (a.k.a. Carlsbad Boulevard).
And of course how many places can you run a marathon in January and not freeze your you-know-what?!
Take a drive with me along historic Route 101 (VIDEO)
In addition to the full marathon, there will be a Half Marathon, as well as a Kids Marathon Mile held at the world-famous Legoland in Carlsbad.
If you live in the area or are visiting, be aware there are some significant road closures for the event, beginning very early Sunday morning (to name a few - east bound lanes of Palomar Airport Road from El Camino to the Coast Road; Carlsbad Boulevard [the Coast Road] from La Costa Avenue all the way to the Buena Vista Lagoon).
Here’s the Spectators’ Guide so you can pick YOUR viewing spot!
Carlsbad Marathon is a qualifying marathon for the Boston Marathon.
The Health and Lifestyle Expo is Friday January 20 from 2 until 6 pm at the Plaza Camino Real Shopping Center off El Camino Real in Carlsbad (just south of the 78 freeway), both the Start and Finish lines are nearby. The Expo continues on Saturday from 10 until 5 and then on Sunday, race day, from 7 am until 12 noon.

Jeff: When my wife and I visited your area a few years back, we made the comment that we had never seen the particular shade of blue that we saw in the sky there anywhere else we'd been. Your picture sure reminds me of that great trip ... so thank you! Hope the skies are this beautiful blue for all the runners in the Marathon on January 22nd ...
Gene
Jeff, it is a great place to marathon and I wish the runners luck...it has never been my sport..
Jeff I agree with Ginny that is a great place to run in a marathon, or in my case, watch a marathon :)
Jeff, What a great event! You have done an excellent job presenting the details. Looks like the entire family can participate in the run or watch from a number of locations. Hopefully the Lifestyle Expo will inspire many to get healthier in 2012! I know it is part of my plan.
How fun! Maybe I will do that one next year! I am running the Tinkerbell 1/2 Marathon next week. No- I am not ready... I always torture myself like that....
<NOW, I see where I know you from>>>>> Did you get the biz plan?
Jeff, more great activities taking place in Carlsbad. Nice Localism Post!
If you ever want to get out of a rut, get fired up, get yourself back on the motivation track and just generally have a great day, spend some time at the finish line of a marathon on race day. Watch people fulfill their personal goals and witness a thousand little stories of human triumph, for free. It is an amazing thing to behold, whether you watch the first finisher or the last.
Great post. Thanks!
Hi Jeff - I have been think about getting in shape to do a marathon. Last winter I spontaneously took up jogging while walking the dog at our local gravel track.
This looks like a sweet event! Nice video too!
Happy New Year Jeff!
Really appreciated getting to know you last year and looking forward to networking in 2012.
Plan a successful year!
It does look like a great scenery while trying to finish a marathon. I know I would need all the help I could get to take my mind off 26 miles of running.
Gene - well there are those days when the blue is truly amazing. The recent weather (since Sudnay) has been beautiful, although a little chilly so it should be great for running.
Ginny - nor mine. Not a big fan of running and it tends to create more problems for my back.
George - GREAT place to watch. But I certainly admire those who are able to do this.
Kathleen - the expo is pretty impressive, at least in years past. Health and wellness is a big issue here in CA as you know and it just keeps getting bigger.
Lauren - there you go. And yes, I did receive it Just got started on things - THANK YOU! Good luck with the 1/2 marathon. I couldn't even do THAT, except by walking. Have fun.
Michael - so true. There are actually several of these events, including the well-known triathlon.
Rob - interesting you should say that. We watched my son-in-law and some friends at the finish line of the LA marathon a few years back. It was a great experience. But not inspiring enough to get me to do so. A long bike ride? Yes. But not running.
Andre - go for it. I know a number of people who got inspired and did so.
Thanks, Tom. Best wishes to you as well this year.
Morgan - ha ha, me too. Not sure there is ANY scenery powerful enough for me.
Jeff
I always enjoy your posts. You really capture the essence of your area and when I am in town I will check your blog to see what is going on. Thanks.
Jeff - Congrats on thea feature! My boys would love to take part in the Carlsbad Marathon.
