Helping Kids Adjust to a Relocation -
Things for Kids to Do in Carlsbad and Nearby (Part 2 of 2)
In the first article in this series I talked about how parents can help their kids adjust to a new move, plus some ways we can be helpful as well. If you missed it check it out.
Helping Kids Adjust to a Relocation - Things for Kids to Do in Carlsbad and Nearby
(Part 1 – Things you can do)
Here are some specific things to do in Carlsbad that likely will appeal to kids.
SPORTS
There are plenty of sports programs of all kinds in the Carlsbad schools – soccer, tennis, basketball, baseball, golf, track and field, cross country, water polo, gymnastics, wrestling, and the list goes on.
And with our weather kids can engage in sporting activities outdoors year round.
Beach volleyball? Got it. Surfing? Got it. There are also surfing schools and camps outside the regular school programs.
Or how about indoor go-karting at K1 Speed?
SUMMER CAMPS
Carlsbad offers a wide range of summer camp programs through the parks and recreation department, as well as the YMCA, covering a wide range of sports and topics – science, music, gardening, art, etc.
SHOPPING
Shopping may not be at the top of the list for everyone, but there are plenty of kids and parents who enjoy it.
The Carlsbad Premium Outlet Mall at Palomar Airport Road and the 5 is huge and a good place to shop. There’s lots of stuff although it may not all be a bargain – and some is pretty upscale.
The Forum Carlsbad in South Carlsbad (at Calle Barcelona off El Camino) is fairly upscale and trendy – picture Talbots, Anthropologie, White House Black Market, J Jill, etc. Downtown Carlsbad Village also offers a host of shopping opportunities.
Or head south on El Camino Real to the Shopping Corridor in Encinitas, about a mile south of The Forum
MUSIC
Anyone with an interest in music will delight in the Museum of Making Music, on Armada Drive between Palomar Airport Rd. and Cannon. Other major musical offerings include the FREE TGIF Jazz in the Parks concert series in 3 Carlsbad parks on successive Fridays in the summer. Bring dinner, drinks, chairs and enjoy a couple hours of great music, dancing, and raffles for great prizes.
LIBRARIES
There are 2 libraries, one in La Costa, the other on Carlsbad Village Drive just east of the freeway and the Village. The Cannon Art Gallery adjacent to the La Costa library is wonderful, with multiple exhibits during the year and a fun open studio day associated with each exhibit for families to create art relates to the current exhibit.
FAIRS & FESTIVALS
Carlsbad has several large arts and crafts fairs during the year with hundreds of vendors at the fairs held in the Village; those in the spring and fall are the largest 1-day outdoor fairs in the country.
ArtSplash is a 2-day art fair held every September on Armada Drive, with art work, dancing, music, and other entertainment, including the Taste of Carlsbad on Saturday.
They have a big chalk art competition and kids can take part in creating their own chalk art for a minimal fee. Proceeds from the fair benefit art programs in the area.
HIKING
Torrey Pines State Reserve in La Jolla is a great place to hike with amazing views of the ocean. More challenging, with incredible views for miles in all directions, is to go hiking in Elfin Forest in Escondido.
In San Elijo Hills, San Marcos visit Double Peak Park. Drive to the top with 360 views with hiking trails all over the mountains. Great views to the ocean, Orange County, Riverside, La Jolla and downtown on clear days.
Another good hike is Mt. Calavera (no, it’s not that high, perhaps a 30 – 45 min hike) just SE of the Calavera Hills master planned community.
And of course you cannot forget the world-famous Legoland, which has recently expanded its offerings, and the Carlsbad Skate Park.
