Lifestyle Questions to Ask Yourself

 

Beachfront homes in CarlsbadNow that you have decided to buy a beach home in Carlsbad, or nearby in one of our other beautiful coastal communities, there are some important lifestyle issues to consider.

 

Presumably you have checked with a lender to determine what you can afford if you are not paying cash since that will have a big impact on your home search, especially near the beach. Knowing your personal budget is key here!

 

Buying a home you will use as a second or vacation home is different than purchasing a primary home where you spend all your time. Most people want a beach or vacation home to enjoy a lifestyle that IS different from how they live their daily lives.

Many people live somewhat differently when enjoying a vacation home than at their primary home, depending on how much time they spend there and how often.

 

Indeed, for many buyers that’s exactly WHY they want a second home – to enjoy a vacation lifestyle away from home and escape the routines of cooking, shopping, maybe even work.

 

You may plan to have more family and guests visiting - I can tell you from personal experience that when friends and family know you have a home at the beach they WILL want to visit…and you will want them to. So bedrooms, and entertaining spaces indoors and out, that accommodate company may be high on your list in your home search.

You might live in a purely residential area at home, but may prefer more of a mixed use area for your beach home, especially if you are hoping to be very close to the beach itself.

 

The type and size of the home you prefer may be different than where you live. For example having a condo or townhome instead of a single family home to avoid having to deal with maintenance when you are not there may make lots of sense.

 

The condition of the home, turn-key vs. fixer, may be more important to you if you don’t want to tackle projects during your vacation times. But finding that could complicate your search, especially depending on your budget. On the other hand, finding a home in the right location near the beach may mean having to do some remodeling or reconfiguring, which might make lots of sense to make it fit your lifestyle.

Hi Jeff- What a good idea to have a questionnaire to help buyers wanting a beach home to decide what kind of lifestyle they want. I can remember the learning curve we had when we bought our first home on the water.

I find that most people are looking at a beach or second home from a different perspective, and want different things, than in a primary home. It certainly makes sense.  We've had a couple of beach homes and it was definitely a differently lifestyle and what was important was very different from our primary home in Boston.
