I See Snow...from Carlsbad

I often get asked about the weather here in Carlsbad from people I talk with who are moving here...or pondering it. Certainly, having lived in New England for many years and dealing with long cold, snowy winters I have no complaints. Indeed, if I want to see snow I just check out the distant mountains from Carlsbad Village Drive near my house and I can enjoy the snow. And sharing the average temps we have, even in the winter, is a pleasant surprise for many. Even with the freeze warnings we've had this last week!

And San Diego County gets snow, too, in our mountains less than an hour inland from the coast... and has especially in the last week with the winter storms we've had. I saw that Julian (an hour inland in the mountains) had 12 inches, and on a number of the mountain roads in the County they were requiring chains on cars. Lots of people were out and about enjoying sledding and other snow activities due to our winter storms.

For me, I'll just enjoy the views of the snow on the mountains a couple of hours drive away! And I'll take beach walks in the winter. But as I tell those who are moving here...if you want snow, it's not that far away for skiing, sledding, making snowmen, and a snowball fight!

We got to see some snow here recently in places that we don't always see snow.  It was neat being in a warm place, yet being able to see snow in the distance.

Thanks, Sheila Anderson

I love seeing the mountains in the distance, and on the clear days we have had after the rain storms I have been able to see some mountains I rarely see. I'm guessing these are about 3 hours drive away!

Hi Brian England

Yep, we have been having snow in some areas that rarely get any, although it's all in the mountains. According to the news people have been heading to the snowy areas in droves to have fun.

I always enjoy visiting our desert in the winter where it's warm but with snow on the neighboring mountains just a few miles away!

Good morning Jeff - I think that SoCal is one of the few places you can go to the beach and go skiiing on the same day.

Ha ha George Souto  yep, I get that. It sounds like while the weather has been cold the amount of snow has been less than normal this winter...that's something to be thankful for I suppose! Hope there are no big surprises before spring arrives!

Hi Grant Schneider  That's so true.  I know a number of people who have gone to the beach, or gone surfing, then hit the slopes a few hours away later on for skiing or snowboarding. I"ll stick to the beach!!
