Summer Returns to Carlsbad October 20, 2019

You might think the title a bit odd, but it's true...at least in terms of summer weather being back in Carlsbad.

Carlsbad Bluffs October 2019

It was 84 both yesterday and again today, and significantly hotter inland, and absolutely gorgeous days to be at the beach. Indeed, many were yesterday when I was out taking some photos and running errands, and as in the summer months the parking was pretty limited. Despite that there were plenty of areas on the beach without a soul in sight!

Those of you who have already experienced cold weather, frost, or even snow might think "what's the big deal...how fortunate you are?!" to have such warm weather in mid-October.

But in Southern California temps like this in October mean the hot, dry Santa Ana winds are blowing in a westerly direction and raising the temperatures and, signficantly, the risk of wildfires, which can spread out of control with the high winds we can see at Santa Ana time.

These winds can be in excess of 60 mph and are very dry, which creates conditions ripe for fires that can spread rapidly. Thankfully the winds do not seem too substantial but any wind at all creates issues when it's this hot and dry.

There were a couple fires I heard about yesterday in San Diego but these were contained fairly quickly. There is a more significant fire burning up in LA in the Pacific Palisades resulting in mandatory evacuation and over 40 acres burned but I'm not sure if any homes in this exclusive area were damaged nor if the winds were an issue in that area or not.

I hear you Jeff - it is forecasted to be 80 degrees in San Francisco itself on Thursday, higher in other bay area spots.

I saw the weather in Chula Vista and I bet my MIL is miserable. I've been meaning to call her because I got a big nice gift from her this week, but that call will have to wait a few days.

Hi Jeff Dowler, CRS,

Those who do not live in CA don't understand Santa Anas.  Cooler air comes off the mountain passes and compresses causing it to heat and speed up as it drops into the valleys. Most of the homes I had were in those wind tunnels. We had wind up to 80-85 mph during the Santa Anas.

We were the first to move into a brand new neighborhood on Halloween 1988 and my husband came home from work to the sound of brick tile crashing all around him! He couldn't see what was happening because there were no lights yet in the neighborhood. He tried to open the front door and couldn't get into the house because I had sealed it shut with tape. The wind and dust were coming right through the front door.

Fortunately, we called the builder and found out they had forgotten to put hurricane clips on the tile roof! They repaired it and sealed all the windows and doors and we never had another problem.

Hi George Souto

This happens pretty much every October so I'm used to it. The temperature was nice but the threat of fires is always looming. I heard about several brush fires but it sounds like they were all under control and no threat to any residential areas, thankfully.

Hi James Dray

It's that time of year, isn't it?! Hope winter doesn't come too soon to your area.

Wayne Martin

We really have no reason to gripe about our weather. This warm weather is not due to last and we will be back to normal October weather, which is pretty darn nice.

Hi Sheri Sperry - MCNE®

That is quite a story!! That builder really goofed!

The winds usually are greater than 30-40 mph near the coast but they sure can be signficant inland as you pointed out. I remember a few years ago when we had the Santa Ana's in early November with the Carlsbad fire and it hit about 100 degrees at the coast!

That looks and sounds beautiful.  I doubt anyone would be excited if summer came back in my neck of the woods, haha.

I love our So. Cal  weather, but this is just a bit much. The Palisades fire is a little close for comfort, and it's supposed to ve 96 here tomorrow with the Santa Anas.

Ha ha well I get that, Brian England , with the summers you have.

Hi Jane Peters

I don't believe it's supposed to be that hot here, at least not at the coast. But there are wind and high fire risk warnings out! Hope there is nothing more to be concerned about!
