I’m Grateful for my Clients

Week 1 in the Gratitude Challenge November 2019

As a business owner being grateful for clients is no small thing, but also pretty obvious.

If I don’t have buyers or sellers to work with, and to help them make some of the most important, and expensive, decisions in their lives…and life changing decisions…I can’t pay my bills (sorry, no trust fund here) and do the things I want and need to do personally and with family and friends.

But while having clients means having money, and financial stability, this is not about that at all.

Thank you cardsOne of the primary things I am grateful for with regard to my clients over the years are the numerous learning opportunities, such as finding alternative ways to solve problems, plus acquiring new information so I can be the best I can be.

When faced with problems to be solved in our business sometimes you get so focused on dealing with the issues, and the emotions, that only later do you realize that it was a good learning experience.

Oh, it might not have been a pleasant one, but it was learning nonetheless.

I’m grateful for the many opportunities over the years to better understand myself personally as a result of working with a wide range of buyers and sellers – the skills I have already or have developed, the things I do well, the developmental challenges (no, I do not view them as weaknesses) to overcome, gaining a better understanding of my hot buttons, improving at being patient and diplomatic, being more aware of my emotions and how they can impact behavior, and so much more.

vintage telephoneI’m also thankful for my written and verbal communication skills and how these continue to improve over the years from working with many different clients, responding to and managing challenging situations, and dealing with varying personalities and all the emotions in the real estate business.

Positive feedback has been a good indicator that this is not just in my head, but communication that is appreciated by my buyers and sellers in many situations over the years.

Is it perfect?? Far from it, but I continue to work at my communication and do the best I can with the varying situations, people and methods (texting, Facetime, emailing, calls, in-person) we are confronted with in this business and in our world of technology.

This is my first entry in the Gratitude Challenge for December. Are YOU participating?

Hello Jeff - our clients, and what they teach us, are definitely something for which to be grateful. I'm often astounded and delighted learning some amazing things my clients do and are.

Good point Lottie Kendall

We can learn so much from our buyers and sellers if we just pay attention.

Jeff this business has many side benefits and rewards, and you have done a great job on identifying a few of them.

Grateful for your clients is a great post.  As we work this business we learn much more than we realize.

Yes clients put dinner on the table but just think of the experience we now have to help others.  We will continue to grow daily.

Thanks George Souto

It's so true - we learn so much in this business and it's not just the technical or transactional stuff. We learn from our mistakes, or others', as well as learn about ourselves.

Thank you for the kind words, Rose Mary Justice . This was not a new revelation, of course, but I thought about it quite a bit and realized how powerful our learning experiences are in this business, in working with so many people, in so many ways.

Jeff Dowler, CRS Everything you said, and for telling me wonderful stories, letting me get them to laugh, them getting me to laugh, and much much more.

Thanks for your thoughts Lauren Williams, CPO . I have enjoyed some wonderful stories, too, and shared some myself. And I have learned all sort of things about different communities that I didn't know, among other things!

Hi Jeff - the benefits that clients provide us are abundant.   Those advantages go beyond the financial security issues  and include so many other factors that go above and beyond the "basics" one might think.  That "certain thing" that arrives for a job well-done can be in the form of a genuine thank you.  It does make a dffierence.

You know you just made me feel a lot better about saying last week to a client.  I'm sorry it's my fault this was so late, it just slipped my mind.  My client was great and knew we'd had a tough week at my office.  We aren't perfect, but if we learn from our mistakes then we're good.

Only later do you realize that it was a good learning experience."
