Ice Skating by the Sea at the Hotel Del Coronado 2019

Skating by the Sea Returns to the Hotel Del Coronado

Beginning November 26, 2019

Believe it or not the time has come for the popular Skating by the Sea at the Hotel Del Coronado in San Diego, the 15th consecutive year. I believe this is the only beachfront ice skating in San Diego!

Skating by the Sea starts Tuesday, November 26th and runs through January 5th 2020. Because of our rain (which was badly needed) the opening of the skating rink has been delayed a few days according to the hotel website.

Wow, imagine ice skating under a bright blue sky with palm trees waving, the sun shining, and a gorgeous beach and ocean just steps away!?

It’s possible you MAY need a sweater, especially with our fall and winter ocean breezes, but generally at this time of year you can expect temps in high 50s to low 60s at the beach. And no snow to worry about!

The iconic Hotel Del Coronado is a special place by the beach and ocean. The Del is great fun for visiting, dining, or just drinks, especially during the holidays, even though it can get crowded, when the property and hotel are beautifully decorated. There is plenty of shopping in the area surrounding the hotel, people watching is fun, and you can watch or even join the ice skaters!

You might enjoy reserved seating at the rink-side Frostbite Lounge to watch the skating, with fire pits, comfortable seats, and beverage and food service (here’s the menu).

Some of the proceeds from Skating by the Sea will benefit the San Diego Make-A-Wish Foundation.

Here’s the schedule (hours subject to change due to weather):

November 26 – December 1
Monday - Friday from 11 am – 10 pm

Saturday from 11 am – 10 pm

Sunday from 11 am – 8 pm

December 2 – 19

Monday – Friday from 11 am until 10 pm

Saturday from 11 am until 10 pm

Sunday from 11 am until 8 pm

NOTE: Chanukah on Ice Dec. 26, 4 – 6:30 pm

Check the website for special events when the rink is closed to the public.

The cost is $30 per person in advance online ($35 when purchased at the rink and $25 with Military ID). Skating time may be limited to 2 hours, depending on the crowds. Skates are included in the price but could be limited during busy periods!

Reserve your Skating by the Sea passes here! There are no in and out privileges, and participants must sign a waiver (parents to sign for those under 18).

Jeff hard to imagine outdoor ice skating in CA., but I imagine it would be a popular activity with area residents.

Sounds like a wonderful idea! Wish I could be there but I have a pretty vivid imagination seeing the local residents skating and having fun.

Looks like a beautiful venue for a fun outing! We have one here in a downtown park every year. Love to see that you don't need cold weather to make it happen.

This always sounds like so much fun, Jeff. It seems incongruous to ice skate in California, but we have the same here in Charlotte and people love it.

Good morning Jeff. Ice skating with temps in the 50's or 60's some of us would wear shorts and a T-shirt! Sounds good to me! Enjoy your day!

I love that hotel and visited it several times long ago - when mom and dad would winter in San Diego. Fun to ice skate at the beach.

Good morning, Jeff Dowler, CRS ice skating in San Diego must be a big hit!!!!  and I'm surprised your temps are in the 50's and 60's!

Such a wonderful event, I am sure that it will be enjoyed by all.  I have friends that had a condo next door to the Del and I regret never going to visit and checking it out.

This sounds like a lot more fun than ice skating around here with mittens and hats and scarves and temps in the 20s.

Hi George Souto

We have been to watch several times, but I haven't been on ice skates for more years than I care to remember.

It's pretty popular. I looked for the photos I took some years ago but couldn't find them. Time to go again. It's fun to see a skating rink by the beach with palm tree waving in the breeze overhead.

It's such a cool setting Dorie Dillard CRS GRI ABR  and it seems to get pretty crowded, at least it was the times we went to watch. Perhaps this year again, too! And such a wonderful fund raiser.

Mimi Foster  - I certainly agree about the cold weather not being needed! LOL

Nina Hollander  We went to watch the first year we were here - it was great fun but so odd to see people ice skating when it was in the 60s, and at the beach!

And people here do Wayne Martin !!

It's a pretty cool place to visit - we have never stayed  there but have been a bunch of times to enjoy the holiday scenery and the skating Debb Janes EcoBroker and Bernie Stea JD
