Cooper's Hawk on our back fence in Carlsbad

Our house backs up to a wooded canyon and as a result we get all kinds of bird and wild life.

We often see hawks nearby in the sky hunting, or nesting in the trees, and occasionally one lands on our fence, as this one did the other day. I believe it's a Cooper's Hawk, which are pretty common in San Diego. As soon as they appear all the other birds disappear...with good reason.

It's great that you were able to get a photo before he flew away!

Great photo of the Cooper's Hawk, Jeff. I've been enjoying seeing little songbirds in the redwood tree that's outside of my home office, and now tall enough to reach the top of our 7th floor condo.

Jeff, that would be WAY cool to see on my deck!    You are very lucky.

Hi Kat Palmiotti

I was surprised! I had to run upstairs to grab my camera from my office - I was sure he or she was going to disappear!

Hi Lottie Kendall

That must be enjoyable! I like watching the birds when I take time. Maybe there will be some nesting outside your office!

Thanks Joan Cox

They don't usually hang around very long...this was a surprise, and fun to see up close. There was also one on the fence over the holidays so the grandkids got to see it!

Hi Jeff- as beautiful as they are, I hope they stay away from my backyard where I have bluebirds and other tasty morsels that they're interested in.

Hi Kathy Streib

I have to agree. I know they need to eat, I just don't want to see them catching and eating, other than perhaps a snake.

Every once in a long while a hawk or owl will visit my property.  I've yet to get a good close up photo like that one.

Hi Jeff, Thanks for sharing that great photo.  He almost looks like he is posing, waiting for you to take the picture.

That is one mean looking bird, Jeff. Wouldn't want to get into fuss with him!
